There's two ways of understanding fashion. One comes from the idea that it can't  go anywhere without an ever growing cycle of consumption. In order to create it, its creatives will have to deliver newer concepts and ideas on as many levels and as fast as possible, so that consumers feel compelled to buy whatever it’s new. The other understanding places creativity at the forefront of a brand’s values, making growth stem from a coherent way of developing the project with creativity at its core. Therefore, creativity in fashion is either understood as the glue that binds a project together or as the carrot that moves the donkey. 

As a consumer, I find myself drawn to the projects or brands that are in the second group. I value the narratives, the care and technology applied to a product, I want fashion that has a place and mission in the world, that produces for a customer that has as much to say as the brand itself, hopefully more, understanding fashion not so much as a way to make loads of money but as a way to create value. 

If you are a designer or creative director at the helm of your own brand, you’ll want to partner with a business person that is also in the second group. Why? Because creativity without a business mind goes nowhere, but a business without honest and compelling creativity will not go very far either. A successful business will need both the creative and the business side valuing and protecting each other, they must remember they’re together in keeping the project alive. As from the customers…Think about this, why buy anything if not for the feeling that it gives us?

The other day I was watching the FW24 Martine Rose show for the second time in the past months. I felt drawn in by the amazing clothes, the cheesy air, the fabulous models and the very campy late 80s music (I even saved the playlist on Spotify) and I found myself crying throughout. Why the tears?- you’d ask. I think it was because I loved it. The older I get, the more easily I cry. I get emotional often, crying at the kindness and beauty of people and at our cruelty and folly. I can’t stand violence, so I rarely watch the news. But I cry a lot when I see people in the zone, celebrating life, and themselves, feeling in harmony and happy, even if it's just for a fleeting moment. I know I'm destroying my punk halo here, but what can I do? Plus, what point is there to be unwilling to conform if I can’t appreciate the things that make me glad to be alive? 

Thinking about it now, I cried because Martine Rose’s trajectory is that of a heroine who toils and toils, refusing to let herself be taken over, to the point where her stubbornness pays off and her determination is justified and celebrated. Also because who takes the time after street casting to then invite their model’s loved ones to celebrate that special moment with them? This care at honouring the people that surround you is rare and special. Community is one of the most beautiful things humans can create. The feeling of belonging is quite something. We are terrified of loneliness but when we belong to a community we are not alone. I love Martine Rose not only for her clothes, but also because her project speaks directly to my soul. I do feel part of her community of misfits while her work and way of doing things gives me hope, reminding me that dreams do come true. Sometimes.

In 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic I, together with Elena Vilabrille, created a podcast called LMQNP, aimed at the Spanish speaking fashion industry and with the goal of empowering the voice of its professionals. We wanted to celebrate their power and values, talk with them about how to steer this industry into a more inclusive and sustainable space and dream with them of a newer global fashion system where values like artisanry, creativity, good practices and respect were the drivers in the conversation. When we started, one of the things that we cared about the most was community. At the beginning it was a somewhat diffuse concept, we knew there were going to be people that shared our values, but we didn't know them yet, we just knew they existed. 

Personally, although I have been a freelancer my whole career, I’ve been lucky enough to have a little community of my own with whom I’ve grown professionally and in life, they aren't just my community, they are my family. But that doesn’t mean I was at peace. This idea of community we had at LMNQP though, was wider, it had to encompass as many of us as possible, even if we didn’t previously know each other. The nature of the freelance job means that life is essentially spent fighting the world (ask @darkartdirectormemes, @stressedstylist, or @fashionassistants), but becoming a voice in search of community showed me how many people were out there too, exhausted at feeling alone and in competition with everyone else. It gave me the opportunity to see the enormity of talent there was, and celebrating their diversity, achievements and worth set me free.

Many things have passed since the three seasons we pulled it off with no budget but lots of generous and talented friends old and new, collaborators and listeners. Sadly today LMQNP is not in conversation anymore, but having the chance to celebrate the Spanish speaking fashion industry really helped me to see things, including my own career journey, in a completely different light. Why do we spend so much time and effort in a mindset that has us pitted against each other? Because we're lacking support and we're worried we won't be able to achieve our goals, forgetting that any goal is more easily achieved as a group. That's why I love the fashion projects that think like that, even if they make me cry.

Hay dos formas de entender la moda. Una parte de la idea de que no se puede ir a ninguna parte sin un ciclo de consumo en constante crecimiento, por lo que para crearlo, sus creativ+s tendrán que buscar una y otra vez conceptos e ideas lo más rápido posible para que los consumidor+s se sientan en la necesidad de comprar cada novedad. La otra concepción sitúa la creatividad en la vanguardia de los valores de una marca, haciendo que su crecimiento se derive de una forma coherente de desarrollar el proyecto, con la creatividad como centro. Por lo tanto, en la moda la creatividad se puede entender como el pegamento que une un proyecto o como la zanahoria que mueve al burro.

Como consumidora, me interesan los proyectos y marcas del segundo grupo. Valoro las narrativas, el cuidado y la tecnología aplicada a un producto, quiero moda que tenga un lugar y una misión en el mundo, que produzca con un cliente en mente que tenga tanto que decir como la propia marca, o incluso más, entendiendo la moda no tanto como una forma de ganar mucho dinero sino como una forma de crear valor que puede ganar mucho dinero también.

Si eres diseñador+ o director+ creativ+ al frente de tu propia marca, querrás asociarte con un+ empresari+ que también pertenezca al segundo grupo. ¿Por qué? Porque la creatividad sin mente empresarial no va a ninguna parte, pero una empresa sin una creatividad sincera y convincente tampoco llegará muy lejos. Una empresa de éxito necesitará que tanto la parte creativa como la empresarial se valoren y protejan mutuamente, deben recordar que están junt+s para mantener el proyecto con buena salud. En cuanto a los clientes... Pensemos en esto, ¿por qué comprar algo si no es por la sensación que nos produce?

El otro día volví a ver el desfile FW24 de Martine Rose por segunda vez en los últimos meses. Fascinada por la ropa espectacular, el rollo cursi, l+s modelos fabulos+s y una música hortera de finales de los 80 tan guay que incluso me guardé la lista de reproducción en Spotify, me pasé todo el desfile llorando. ¿Por qué las lágrimas? Creo que porque me encantó. Cuanto más mayor me hago, más fácil me viene el llanto. Me emociono a menudo, lloro por la bondad y la belleza de las personas y por nuestra crueldad y locura. No soporto la violencia, así que rara vez veo las noticias. Pero lloro mucho cuando veo a la gente fluir en ese lugar mágico, celebrando la vida y a sí mismos, sintiéndose en armonía y felices, aunque sea por un momento fugaz. Sé que me estoy cargando mi fama de punky con esta confesión, pero ¿qué hacer? Además, ¿qué sentido tiene no estar dispuesta a conformarme si no puedo apreciar las cosas que merecen la pena de estar viva? 

Pensándolo bien, lloraba porque la historia de Martine Rose es la de una campeona que se esfuerza y se esfuerza, negándose a dejarse arrastrar, hasta el punto en que esa obstinación da sus frutos y su determinación se ve justificada y celebrada finalmente. También lloré porque ¿quién se molesta, después de hacer street casting, en invitar a los seres queridos de sus modelos para celebrar con ell+s ese momento tan especial? Este esmero en honrar a la gente que te rodea es poco habitual. La comunidad es una de las cosas más bellas que puede crear el ser humano. El sentimiento de pertenencia es algo muy especial. Nos aterroriza la soledad, pero cuando pertenecemos a una comunidad no nos sentimos sol+s. Me encanta Martine Rose, no sólo por su ropa, sino también porque su proyecto le habla a mi alma. Me siento parte de su comunidad de inadaptados y su trabajo y su forma de hacer las cosas me dan esperanza, me recuerdan que los sueños se hacen realidad. A veces.

Como much+s sabéis, en 2020 y en plena pandemia, Elena Vilabrille y yo creamos un podcast llamado La Moda Que Nos Parió, dirigido a la industria de la moda de habla hispana y con el objetivo de potenciar la voz de sus profesionales. Queríamos celebrar su poder y sus valores, hablar con ell+s sobre cómo dirigir esta industria hacia un espacio más inclusivo y sostenible y soñar con un nuevo sistema de moda global en el que valores como la artesanía, la creatividad, las buenas prácticas y el respeto fueran los motores de la conversación. Cuando empezamos, una de las cosas que más nos importaba era la comunidad. Al principio era un concepto algo difuso, sabíamos que iba a haber gente que compartiera nuestros valores, pero aún no la conocíamos, sólo sabíamos que existían.

Personalmente, aunque he sido freelance toda mi carrera, he tenido la suerte de tener una pequeña comunidad propia con la que he crecido profesionalmente y en la vida, no son sólo mis compañer+s, son mi familia. Pero eso no significa que estuviera en paz. Sin embargo, la idea de comunidad que teníamos en LMNQP era más amplia, tenía que abarcar al mayor número posible de personas, aunque no nos conociéramos de antes. La naturaleza del trabajo freelance significa que nos pasamos la vida luchando contra el mundo (si no que se lo pregunten a @darkartdirectormemes, @stressedstylist, o @fashionassistants), pero convertirnos en una voz en busca de comunidad me mostró cuánta gente estaba ahí fuera también, agotada de sentirse sola y en competencia con tod+s los demás. Me dio la oportunidad de ver la enormidad de talento que había, y celebrar su diversidad, sus logros y su valía me dio mucha libertad.

Han pasado muchas cosas desde las tres temporadas que sacamos este proyecto adelante sin presupuesto pero con un montón de ganas,  amig+s (viejos y nuevos) generos+s y llen+s de talento, colaborador+s y oyentes. Lamentablemente hoy LMQNP ya no está en conversación, pero tener la oportunidad de celebrar la industria de la moda de habla hispana realmente me ayudó a ver las cosas, incluyendo mi propia trayectoria profesional, bajo una luz completamente diferente. ¿Por qué perdemos tanto tiempo y esfuerzo con una mentalidad que nos enfrenta a los demás? Porque nos falta apoyo y nos preocupa no ser capaces de alcanzar nuestros objetivos, olvidando que en realidad es mucho más fácil alcanzar cualquier meta en grupo. Por eso me encantan los proyectos de moda que piensan así, aunque me hagan llorar.

Suficiente de mí por hoy, queridis. Que tengáis una bonita semana, aseguraos de pasar tiempo con alguien que os haga sentir como en casa.

Hay algo en nuestra forma de vestir, del modo en que llevamos la ropa, que tiene poco que ver con la moda y mucho con el Zeitgeist. Tú, yo y la sociedad en general nos vestimos de una determinada manera porque el espíritu de la época hace que ciertas siluetas sean relevantes. Lo importante no es tanto lo que llevamos sino cómo lo llevamos.

Una de las primeras cosas en las que hay que sumergirse al empezar a estudiar moda es entender la(s) silueta(s) de cada época. Por ejemplo, a finales de los años 30 y principios de los 40 del siglo pasado las mujeres llevaban trajes de dos piezas con hombreras que les daban un aspecto marcial, sencillo y práctico. ¿Por qué? Porque la Segunda Guerra Mundial estaba a la vuelta de la esquina y el mundo se militarizaba, por lo que la ropa fue una de las primeras cosas que se adaptó al espíritu del momento. Hay innumerables ejemplos de esto a lo largo de la historia, y todos ellos son probablemente bien conocidos por vosotr+s, así que no voy a aburriros con ello. Ya sabéis a qué me refiero.

Es demasiado pronto para ponerle adjetivos al espíritu de nuestro tiempo, estamos tan inmers+s en él que aún no lo sabemos, y eso está bien. Pero una de las cosas que me parecen más interesantes de los últimos 20 años es cómo se han difuminado las líneas que separan la moda masculina de la femenina, especialmente durante los últimos diez, cuando las barreras de género se han mezclado cada vez  más y el armario masculino se ha expandido hasta explotar, permitiendo a los hombres dar rienda suelta a su creatividad con la ropa y enfrentarse a las ideas preconcebidas sobre cómo debe ser, comportarse y presentarse un hombre. Es toda una revolución, pero estamos tan inmers+s en ella que aún no hemos reflexionado mucho sobre este tema.

Hoy me gustaría analizar algunos de mis trucos de estilismo favoritos de la temporada de desfiles masculinos de otoño-invierno 24, que todo el mundo puede aplicar y que pueden inspirarnos nuevas formas de dar estilo a lo que ya tenemos. Sin necesidad de comprar nada, podemos refrescar nuestro armario con mirarlo desde otro punto de vista. Si no tienes algo de lo que sugiero aquí, pero te gusta el look, entonces ya te planteas si te lo compras o no.

En primer lugar, vamos a liberar la zona de las medias que va en oscuro vía JW Anderson. Después de la tendencia viral pero muy poco práctica de las bragas como parte de abajo, llega el boxer de las medias a la vista, algo mucho más sensato pero todavía bastante travieso. Lo combinamos con un jersey oversize para mayor comodidad y calcetines oscuros con zapatos de cordones o bailarinas. Si como estilismo te sigue pareciendo demasiado, opta por unos shorts de punto o deportivos

A continuación viene uno guay, guantes largos sobre mangas, ya sean las de una americana o camisa fluida (Dries Van Noten), una manga tres cuartos oversize (Zegna) o un abrigo (Givenchy). No es el truco más práctico para que el look resulte cómodo, la verdad, porque como diría mi abuela: "Gato con guantes no caza". Sin embargo, el look es bastante cool y el otro día vi a Demna Gvasalia en una entrevista con Cathy Horyn llevando un par de guantes largos con una camiseta de  manga corta ancha. Es cierto que todo lo que hizo fue sentarse a hablar, cierto es que sería interesante ver cómo le iría a esta idea en una visita al baño. Pero un lookazo es un lookazo.

Esta es mi silueta de invierno por antonomasia. Me encantan las americanas, como ya he mencionado aquí, los que me conocéis sabéis que si quedáis conmigo, lo más probable es que aparezca con una puesta. También tengo un plumas corto oversize muy querido de cuando era una niñata que todavía uso mucho, así que el look suele ser mucho volumen sobre una prenda más larga. Cuando empecé a llevarlo, la gente me miraba raro, pero ya no, parece que por fin se ha aceptado como idea de estilismo maravilla. Aquí hay tres opciones: blazer (Zegna), chaqueta midi (¿o es un vestido?, Juun. J) y abrigo largo (Balmain). La clave de este truco reside en la silueta, claro está, la prenda de arriba debe ser voluminosa, de lo contrario parecerá que vas en Ryanair sin equipaje facturado.

Estos tres son de mis favoritos, primero camiseta de fútbol sobre camisa y corbata según Botter, he estado pensando que como en el hemisferio norte estamos llegando a la primavera, serían demasiadas capas, pero podemos sustituirla por una camiseta de baloncesto grande, estoy buscando una versión de la NBA de segunda mano. Yo tenía muchas de fútbol y béisbol vintage que no tengo ni idea de dónde terminaron, esas también son una buena opción si tienes una.

Luego está la bata de estar por casa sobre cualquier look (en términos de silueta, a mí me gusta más con pantalones o vestido largo, pero cada cual con su rollo) como capa superpuesta. Yo suelo hacerlo con kimonos porque sigo a la caza de una bata vintage de hombre bonita. Había algunas increíbles en Suginami, en Tokio, pero como me puse en modo acaparadora de kimonos no cabía todo en la maleta. Lo hecho, hecho está, así que tendré que seguir buscando.

Por último, un chaleco de bolsillos sobre la piel desnuda (o un sujetador sin aros). Este look es sexy, interesante y cómodo. Perfecto para los días de finales de primavera. Este es de Rhude. Si el chaleco es demasiado o te resulta incómodo, puedes optar por uno de punto

Grace Wales Bonner siempre da en el clavo con sus siluetas. Esta temporada, los pantalones cargo van a estar por todas partes y las botas de caña alta también. Me encanta la idea de los calcetines de fútbol asomando por debajo de unas bermudas largas y por encima de las botas o la de los pantalones cargo metidos por dentro de la bota. 

Ayayay, esa sensación cuando sales del aeropuerto todavía vestido con la ropa de vacaciones y hace un frío que pela... Pues sí, parece que el abrigo sobre botín con calcetines es tendencia, y si se hace bien el look no sólo tendrá un punto aventurero sino también divertido. Aquí, GMBH pone un abrigo de hombrerazas sobre botas de caña alta, mientras que Kenzo y Doublet optan por la opción más literal con espinillas al aire, calcetines y botines.

Ay… el placer de enviar mensajes contradictorios a través de la ropa… ¿Un chándal con zapatillas de leopardo? Sí, por favor, y cuando digo leopardo también puedo decir charol o cualquier otra opción elegante y fina, este ejemplo es de Wales Boner, rollo narcotraficante en Miami. 

Luego están los estilismos a base de capas, este ejemplo de Rhude con piel (falsa o vintage, por favor), una americana de cuadros y sudadera con capucha me ha hecho pensar en quizá darle una segunda vida a algunas de las pieles que he ido heredando y con las que no sé qué hacer.

Una chaqueta de smoking siempre está llena de potencial, porque al ser una prenda que normalmente se utiliza en un contexto muy concreto, permite subvertirla bastante. Mezclándola con unos pantalones de chándal oversize de raya lateral y unas botas de punta nos da traje de gala, pero mucho más punki.

Los tres últimos para el camino. Ya he hablado de lo bello que es un estilismo de gama de color con una prenda contrastada, pero este de Wooyoungmi del año pasado me pareció un ejemplo fantástico. También me encanta mezclar rosa y rojo (Isabel Marant), de hecho esta colección me recuerda lo mucho que suelo preferir sus looks masculinos a los femeninos, la mujer Marant siempre me da un poco anticuada, no me matéis.

Una cintura marcada es siempre bien, tanto en hombre como en mujer si se hace con cabeza. Metiendo un top o camiseta amplia por dentro de unos pantalones de cintura elástica tenemos un look cómodo y moderno que en general suele sentar bien, además el remetimiento ayuda darle forma a la parte de arriba y a que haga un volumen bonito.

Eso es todo por mi parte esta semana. Bueno, casi todo. La semana pasada Diary of a Fashion misfit cumplió 6 meses. Quiero daros las gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, estoy sorprendida por el hecho de que me las he arreglado para escribir fielmente (casi) cada semana e increíblemente agradecida de que me hayais estado leyendo durante todo este tiempo. Como habréis notado, las dos últimas semanas he enviado tanto la versión española como la inglesa, en realidad ocurrió por error, no obstante, tengo curiosidad por saber si preferís recibir ambas versiones o sólo la inglesa con el enlace a la española. En un principio elegí hacer esto para evitar ensuciar vuestros buzones y que me llamáseis pesada, pero como ha tenido bastante éxito, me encantaría que me dijerais qué preferís. La encuesta no me dará resultados personalizados, así que cualquier comentario al respecto será muy apreciado.

There’s something about the way we style our clothes, about the clothes we wear too, that has nothing to do with fashion and all to do with the Zeitgeist. You, me and society at large wear our clothes in a certain way because the spirit of the times makes one or more silhouettes relevant.

One of the first things that you have to dive into when starting fashion school is understanding the silhouettes of each era. For instance, during the late 30s and early 40s -last century- women wore two-piece suits that emphasised the shoulders and gave them a martial, unfussy and practical look. Why? Because WW2 was right around the corner and the world was getting into a militarised mood, therefore clothing was one of the first things which adapted to the spirit of the times. There are countless examples of this throughout history, and all of them are probably well-known to you, so I’m not going to bore you there. You know where I’m getting at.

It is too early to put labels on the spirit of our times, being so immersed in them that we just don’t know yet, and that is fine. But one of the things that I find most interesting from the past 20 years is how the lines between men’s and womenswear have been blurred, especially during the last ten, when the gender barriers blended more and more and the male wardrobe expanded and exploded, allowing men to unleash their creativity with clothes and shatter previous preconceptions about how a man should look, behave and present himself. This is such a revolution, but we’re so immersed in it that we haven’t reflected much on this matter yet. 

Today I’d like to go through my favourite styling ideas from the men’s Fall 24 shows. These tips can be applied by everyone, and will hopefully unleash new ways to style what we already have. The plan isn’t to buy stuff but to find a new take on ways of wearing our clothes. If you don’t have something of what I suggest here, but like the look, then you do as you see fit about it.

First, unleashing the boxer brief of your tights via JW Anderson. After the viral but highly impractical knickers as bottoms trend, comes the sensible but still naughty visible boxer brief, paired with an oversized sweater for comfort and wearability and dark socks with brogues or ballerinas. If this hack is still too much, just go for knitted or sporty shorts. 

Next comes a good one, long gloves over sleeves, be it a flowy blazer or shirt (Dries Van Noten), a three-quarter oversized sleeve (Zegna) or a coat (Givenchy). This is not the most practical hack in terms of keeping the look comfortable, because as my grandma would say: “A gloved cat can’t hunt”. Nevertheless, the look is quite cool and the other day I watched Demna Gvasalia sit down through a long interview with Cathy Horyn wearing a pair of long gloves under wide short sleeves. True, all he did was sit down and talk, it'd be interesting to see how this hack would fare on a visit to the bathroom, but it’s a showstopper nonetheless.   

This is my winter silhouette through and through. I do love a blazer, as I previously mentioned here, those of you who know me know that if you’re meeting me, chances are I’m going to turn up with one on. I also own a very beloved oversized cropped puffer coat from when I was a teenager that I still use a lot, so the look is usually cropped and bulky over a longer piece. When I started wearing it people gave me strange looks, but not anymore, as it seems to have been finally accepted as a great and cool styling hack. Three options here, from a blazer (Zegna) to a midi jacket, or is it a dress? (Juun. J) to long coat (Balmain). The key for this styling tip lies in the volume, the piece on top must be bold, otherwise, it feels like you’re travelling on Ryanair to a cold fashion week destination without checked-in luggage.

Three favourites here, first the football jersey overshirt and tie via Botter, I have been thinking that since in the northern hemisphere, we’re hitting spring there might be too many layers here, so it can be substituted with a basketball oversized jersey instead and I’m hunting online for a second hand NBA version.  I used to have many vintage football and baseball ones that I have no idea where they ended up, those are great options too if you happen to own one.

Then there is the home robe over whatever you happen to be wearing (in terms of silhouette I usually prefer to stick to trousers or a longer dress for this look, but you do you) as a textured and quirky overlayer. This is a sporty version via Namesake, I do it with kimonos because I’m still on the hunt for a cool vintage men’s robe. I saw some amazing ones in Suginami City in Tokyo, but since I hoarded on kimonos instead, what’s done is done and I’ll have to keep looking.

Finally, a utility waistcoat over bare skin (or a cool unwired bra). This look is sexy, interesting and comfortable. Perfect for late spring days. The example here comes courtesy of Rhude. If the utility waistcoat is too much or feels uncomfortable, you can also go for a knitted one.

Grace Wales Bonner is always spot-on with her silhouettes, this season, cargo pants were everywhere and so were high boots. I love both the idea of the football socks peeking from under a pair of longer shorts and over the boots or the cargo pants tucked in.  

Ayayay, that feeling when you exit the airport wearing your holiday gear and the temperatures are freezing… Yes, seems like a trend too, and when done properly the look will not only feel adventurous but also fun. Here, GMBH layers a coat over high boots while Kenzo and Doublet taking it more literally go for the option of bare shins, socks and ankle boots.

Oh, the joy of sending mixed messages! A tracksuit with leopard slippers? Yes please and when I say leopard I say patent leather or any smart dressy kind of option, this example is from Wales Boner, Miami druglord vibes all over.  Then there’s layering, this one sporting fur (fake or vintage please), a chequered blazer and a hoodie via Rhude has me thinking about giving a second life to some of the furs I’ve been gradually inheriting and don’t know what to do with. An evening jacket (this is by Rhude too) is always a playground, because it being a garment that is normally used in a very specific context, allows for subversion games. Mixing it with oversized side-striped tracksuit pants and pointy boots nods to the notion of a smoking suit, but a very funky one.

Last three for the road. The beauty of tonal styling with a clashing piece I’ve already talked about, but I thought this was a fantastic example via last year’s Wooyoungmi. The joy of mixing pink and red (Isabel Marant) I’ve talked about too, actually this collection made me think about how much I usually prefer her men’s to her women’s looks, the women always feel a bit dated to me, don’t kill me. A cinched waist is beautiful on everyone, tucking a top layered over a dash of colour inside elastic waistband trousers is the kind of look that feels contemporary and comfortable, because it is generally really flattering and the tucking helps create a beautiful shape on top.

I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, I am shocked at the fact that I’ve managed to write faithfully (nearly) every week and incredibly grateful that you guys read me throughout. As you have noticed, in the last two weeks I’ve sent both the Spanish and the English versions, it actually happened by mistake, nevertheless, I am curious as to whether you prefer receiving both versions or just the English one with the link to the Spanish one. I originally chose to do this to avoid littering your mailboxes and you finding me bothersome, but since it was pretty successful, I really would be very grateful if you could let me know what you prefer. The poll will not give me personalised results, so any comments on this matter will be very much appreciated too.

The fashion industry is a really interesting example when it comes to the matter of power. Historically, fashion has stayed at the battle front when it comes to women’s liberation; allowing them to push against society’s dictates, for instance, but it has also been a place where power dynamics and lack of representation have left a big chunk of society feeling abused, not seen, or disenfranchised by it. When it comes to fashion media, the notion of power is perpetually at the centre of the conversation, we strive for, create and exploit it. Traditionally, although this is thankfully something of the past, power in fashion imagery used to be depicted with hostile attitudes, as if to be powerful meant to be a utter b*tch. Why? Because power in fashion terms is like a token, the promised land, even in such a trivial matter as wearing a well cut piece of clothing or the right accessory in order to be considered fashionable or accepted socially. Then again, power is also what as consumers we give fashion brands or megacorporations when purchasing their products. Power and agency is what a female garment worker gets when she's able to feed her family or support herself financially, but disempowerment is exactly what she feels when after having worked all day the wages are not enough and/or she has to deal with sexual or psychological harassment by a manager or authority figure within the factory or workplace. 

Because abuse (of different levels and kinds) is not something just happening in factories, it happens within the studios, the offices, and the ateliers. According to the study "Success in Fashion" conducted by Vogue, issues like burnout, inequality on sexual or racial grounds, and difficulty in leading a balanced work-life situation are rife amongst fashion professionals. Although the survey focused specifically on achieving success, I have the feeling that in this context both concepts are intimately related -we can and usually do feel powerful when experiencing success, and although we could be extremely successful while feeling intimately powerless- in general terms even if these two words are by no means interchangeable, they often go hand in hand. The other day I was watching a documentary about an iconic fashion designer and I was aghast to see how another high ranking designer at the house felt it was totally ok to humiliate an employee in front of the camera, as if nothing strange was happening. .

Such feeling of disempowerment is not only related to female workers and professionals, it is widespread, affecting both men and women working in the industry, although maybe more acute if you belong to a minority; in the example above, for instance, the person receiving the harassment was a man. It has sometimes been my experience in the fashion and advertising industries that the lines separating which behaviours at work are acceptable from those that aren’t are often blurred. I believe that the burnout of fashion professionals mentioned in the survey is directly linked to a line of work that makes it very difficult for boundaries to be set up and kept in place. When the job is perceived as the dream of a million people, the fact that involves working very long hours, assisting or doing odd days or extra hours for free, establishing relationships which mix the personal with the professional and the multiple biases that as members of society we naturally have, it’s just very hard to feel powerful all the time. My life recently, in terms of work, has been a rollercoaster. I've felt both very powerful and completely disempowered, all while being the same fashion professional with the same skill set and the same personality. The difference lies in the client. While some value creative output and skill and celebrate talent, others are suspicious and hoard opportunity.

Quite timely, just last Friday we were celebrating International Womens’ Day, so women’s rights and roles seemed like the perfect backdrop for such comings and goings in my life. I came across a very interesting article by Elise Loehnen in which she analyses how women are trained to be good and men to be successful. As a female, it made me reflect on how much I’ve sometimes felt compelled to hold on for dear life on “being good” so that misbehaving clients might value me. And when I say good, I don’t mean a good professional, but an all too nice one, either by trying to avoid conflict or by bending over to unreasonable demands. I marvel at how I have at times had to overlook my boundaries in order to remain on good terms with a client or boss. Were these bosses male? Certainly not. And is it all worth it? Surely not. 

One thing that I find fascinating about Generación Z professionals is that they are much less willing to deal with this kind of stuff. On the one hand, working with them can feel like a challenge because unlike millennials, who had to break their backs for the job and deal with a workplace where the notion of boundaries was simply non existent, Gen Z-ers have no problem in taking for them what they feel is their due, be it a better work/life balance, a salary, etcetera. As annoying as these entitled (and sometimes unreasonable) ways could feel for millennials, who are usually the ones in charge of managing them, the respect these young professionals demand and the fact that they do not wait for others to give them power, but take it instead, might not in the long run create better workplace practices that will benefit everyone?

I do believe that power doesn't just translate as how we feel in the morning on a way to a meeting, but also on the choices we dare make, leaving fear out of the equation. As the younger generation fights back, I think we could all bring some power into our lives and ignore whatever conditioning we might have to wield it naturally.

La industria de la moda es un ejemplo muy interesante en materia de poder. Históricamente, la moda ha estado en el frente de batalla de la liberación de la mujer, permitiéndole, por ejemplo, oponerse a los dictados de la sociedad, pero también ha sido un lugar en el que las dinámicas de poder y la falta de representación han hecho que gran parte de la sociedad se sintiera maltratada, ignorada o privada de sus derechos. En el mundo de la moda, la noción de poder está siempre en el centro de la conversación: nos esforzamos por conseguirlo, lo creamos y lo explotamos. Tradicionalmente, aunque afortunadamente esto ya es cosa del pasado, el poder en las imágenes de moda femenina solía representarse con actitudes hostiles, como si ser poderosa conllevase ser una chunga. ¿Por qué? Porque el poder en términos de moda es como un símbolo, una tierra prometida, incluso en una cuestión tan trivial como es llevar una prenda bien hecha o el accesorio de moda para ser considerado estilos+ o aceptad+ socialmente. Por otra parte, el poder es también lo que, como consumidor+s, otorgamos a marcas de moda y megacorporaciones cuando compramos sus productos. Poder y agencia es lo que obtiene una trabajadora de la confección cuando es capaz de alimentar a su familia o mantenerse económicamente, pero impotencia es exactamente lo que siente cuando después de haber trabajado todo el día el salario no es suficiente y/o tiene que afrontar acoso sexual o psicológico de una figura de autoridad dentro de la fábrica o lugar de trabajo.

Porque el abuso (de distintos niveles y tipos) no es algo que ocurra sólo en las fábricas, sino también en los estudios, las oficinas y los ateliers. Según el estudio "Success in Fashion" realizado por Vogue, entre los profesionales de la moda abundan problemas como el agotamiento, la desigualdad por motivos sexuales o raciales y la dificultad para llevar una vida laboral equilibrada. Aunque el estudio se centraba específicamente en la idea de tener éxito, tengo la sensación de que en este contexto ambos conceptos están íntimamente relacionados -podemos y solemos sentirnos empoderados cuando experimentamos el éxito, y aunque podríamos tener mucho éxito sintiéndonos íntimamente impotentes- en términos generales aunque estas dos palabras no sean en absoluto intercambiables, a menudo van de la mano. El otro día estaba viendo un documental sobre una marca de moda icónica y me quedé atónita al ver cómo a un diseñador de alto rango de la casa le parecía totalmente bien humillar a un empleado delante de la cámara, como si no estuviera pasando nada extraño.

Este sentimiento de falta de poder no sólo afecta a las trabajadoras y profesionales, sino que está muy extendido y afecta tanto a hombres como a mujeres dentro del sector, aunque quizá sea más agudo si se pertenece a una minoría; en el ejemplo anterior, por ejemplo, la persona que recibía el acoso era un hombre. Mi experiencia en los sectores de la moda y la publicidad me ha enseñado que las líneas que separan los comportamientos laborales aceptables de los que no lo son son difusas. Creo que el agotamiento de los profesionales de la moda mencionado en la encuesta está directamente relacionado con una línea de trabajo que hace muy difícil establecer y mantener los propios límites. Cuando el trabajo se percibe como el sueño de un millón de personas, el hecho de que implique trabajar muchas horas, asistir o hacer días sueltos u horas extra gratis, establecer relaciones que mezclan lo personal con lo profesional y los múltiples prejuicios que como miembr+s de la sociedad tenemos tod+s, es muy difícil sentirse poderos+ todo el tiempo. Recientemente, mi vida laboral ha sido una montaña rusa. Me he sentido a la vez muy poderosa y completamente desempoderada, siendo la misma profesional, con las mismas habilidades y la misma personalidad. La diferencia radica en el cliente. Mientras que algun+s valoran la creatividad y habilidad y celebran el talento, otros desconfían y acaparan oportunidades.

Muy oportunamente, el viernes pasado se celebraba el Día Internacional de la Mujer, así que los derechos y roles de la muje marcaron un telón de fondo perfecto para estas idas y venidas en mi vida. Encontré un artículo muy interesante de Elise Loehnen en el que analiza cómo nuestras sociedades entrenan a las mujeres para ser buenas y a los hombres para tener éxito. Como mujer, me hizo reflexionar sobre lo mucho que a veces me he sentido obligada a aferrarme a "ser buena" para que clientes imposibles me valoren. Y cuando digo buena, no me refiero a una buena profesional, sino a una demasiado amable, ya sea tratando de evitar conflictos o aceptando exigencias poco razonables. Me maravillo de cómo a veces he tenido que pasar por alto mis límites para quedar bien con un client+ o jef+. ¿Eran estos jef+s hombres? No necesariamente. ¿Y merece la pena? Pues no.

Una cosa que me parece fascinante de l+s profesionales de la Generación Z es que están mucho menos dispuest+s a lidiar con este tipo de cosas. Por un lado, trabajar con ell+s puede ser un reto porque, a diferencia de l+s millennials, acostumbrados a dejarse la piel en el trabajo y a lidiar con entornos de trabajo donde la noción de límites era inexistente, l+s Gen Z no tienen ningún problema en demandar lo que creen que les corresponde, ya sea un mejor equilibrio entre trabajo y vida personal, un buen salario, etcétera. Por muy incómodas que estas formas de actuar tan exigentes (y a veces poco razonables) puedan resultar para los millennials, que suelen ser sus jef+s, el respeto que exigen est+s jóvenes profesionales y el hecho de que no esperen a que nadie les de poder, sino que se lo tomen por su cuenta, ¿no creará a la larga mejores prácticas en el lugar de trabajo que beneficiarán a todos?

El poder no sólo se traduce en cómo nos sentimos por la mañana de camino a una reunión, sino también en las decisiones que nos atrevemos a tomar, dejando el miedo fuera de la ecuación. A medida que la generación más joven se defiende, quizá tod+s podríamos aportar algo de poder a nuestras vidas e ignorar aquellos condicionamientos que nos impiden ejercerlo con naturalidad.

¿A quién le pertenece el color? ¿Es algo que se puede comprar o vender, algo que alguien puede llamar propio? Hay muchos casos en la cultura popular en los que un color concreto ha recibido un apellido, como el rosa shocking (el de Schiaparelli), azul klein o rojo valentino, con la idea de que nos resulte más fácil localizar el tono exacto en nuestra imaginación. Pero de hecho, muchos colores son marca registrada; como el rojo de las suelas de Louboutin, el morado de los envoltorios de Cadbury o el azul de Tiffany's.

El primer color se registró en 1985 en Estados Unidos, prohibiendo su uso a las marcas de la competencia. Este es un concepto al que todos estamos ya acostumbrados hoy en día, pero me sorprendió saber que Yves Klein registró su tono de azul en 1960 para que otros artistas no pudieran utilizarlo en sus obras, lo cual hasta cierto punto puedo entender pero no estar de acuerdo -prohibir su uso sólo habla de su miedo a que alguien pudiera superarle-, pero lo que realmente me sorprendió es que Anish Kapoor hiciera lo mismo con un tono de negro tan profundo que no refleja la luz. Tengo curiosidad por saber qué pasó después, una vez muerto Klein, ¿heredó este color su familia? ¿Significa esto que este tono de azul les pertenece para siempre? El caso del negro de Kapoor es aún peor, pensemos en esto un segundo, el color no es algo tangible sino la forma en que nuestro ojo percibe la interacción de un pigmento con la luz, o como dice Pantone:

"El color se define como el aspecto de las cosas que es causado por las diferentes cualidades de la luz que es reflejada o emitida por ellas. Para ver el color, tiene que haber luz. Cuando la luz incide sobre un objeto, algunos colores rebotan en él y otros son absorbidos. Nuestros ojos sólo ven los colores que rebotan o se reflejan"

Por lo tanto, se trata de una sensación, una experiencia que ocurre en nuestro ojo, pero estos tonos ya existen en la naturaleza, así que si el Sr. Kapoor es el dueño del color que imaginamos que tiene un agujero negro, ¿significa esto él considera que el Universo debería pagarle derechos de autor?

Resulta que Pantone, la multinacional cuya definición anterior dice claramente que el color es sólo una cualidad que vemos, pero que vive de vender su sistema de categorización del color y que trata de definir cada año qué color va a regir nuestras vidas (fallando a veces, como señalaré más adelante), ha encontrado la manera de agenciarse una buena parte de la paleta de colores, ¿cómo? Uniendo fuerzas con Adobe, otra megacorporación que obtiene sus beneficios cobrando todos los meses por el mismo programa. Si eres diseñador gráfico, por ejemplo, ahora tienes que pagar a Pantone para utilizar toda una gama de colores en productos de Adobe como inDesign o Photoshop. Lo que empezó siendo una imprenta que encontró la forma de clasificar los tonos de color para que las marcas pudieran usar el mismo en todos sus productos, evolucionó luego hacia el negocio de clasificar gamas de color y crear guías (que inexplicablemente cambian cada año) y ahora es un mega emporio que pretende ser el p*to amo en lo que al color se refiere. Así es como ahora estamos inmersos en un sistema colonial del color, del tipo: "Si yo lo identifiqué primero, entonces me pertenece, sin importar que antes existiera a la vista de todos".

Stuart Semple es un artista multidisciplinar y activista británico que considera ridícula la idea de poseer el color y ha decidido actuar en consecuencia, decidido a devolver a los creativos lo que siempre les ha pertenecido: su capacidad de utilizar el color. En su tienda online, Culture Hustle, él y su equipo crean y venden los pigmentos que "pertenecen" a esas corporaciones o marcas, al tiempo que se burlan de ellas cambiándoles los nombres para que se parezcan a los originales. Así, Tiffany's Blue se convierte en Tiff Blue, Klein Blue es Easy Klein, y Viva Magenta (el color del año 2023 de Pantene) se convierte en Viva Meh-Genta (algo así como Viva Sin-más-genta). Curiosamente, Anish Kapoor, a quien considera su archienemigo, tiene prohibida la entrada en su sitio web y la compra de sus productos, que están disponibles para el resto del mundo. Una de sus principales patadas a este sistema fue lanzar Freetone, un plugin gratuito de Adobe que restaura los colores que ya no se incluyen con Adobe a menos que pagues a Pantone.

Volviendo al Color del Año su Viva Magenta me recordó un poco al nuevo rojo burdeos de Gucci, y me pregunté si Pantone realmente había dado en el clavo, pero cuando publicaron el nuevo color para 2024, llamado Peach Fuzz (piel de melocotón), una elección decididamente aburrida en beige anaranjado -me encantó que la versión de Stuart Semple se llamara Cheap Buzz (algo así como Ruido Barato)- me hizo pensar en la veracidad de estas predicciones y en lo mucho que se hacen en connivencia y/o competencia con empresas de predicción de tendencias como WGSN. Al final funcionan como una profecía autocumplida, en la que Pantone se convierte en árbitro de estilo y desvía la conversación hacia lo que ellos dicen que estará de moda. Esto crea una expectación mediática que hace que los creativos utilicen esos colores, cerrando así el círculo y transformando realmente esta predicción en una realidad.

Si hay un color que ha reinado durante los últimos meses y sigue pisando fuerte es el rojo, un tono escarlata brillante que está ahora por todas partes. Aunque no es una tendencia para los súper jóvenes; más interesad+s en un gris polvoriento y grunge en la línea de KNWLS; estas semanas he estado trabajando la mayor parte del tiempo en las tiendas y es sin duda una fijación para Millennials y los mayores de la Generación Z. Aún así, el rojo es el color que está en todas partes. He notado, como seguramente vosotr+s, una oleada de rojo en todos mis feeds, desde instagram a pinterest, pasando por la calle. Según Tagwalk, , el rojo fue el color más buscado en la plataforma durante 2023 y según Highsnobiety, la búsqueda de looks con medias rojas en Pinterest "ha experimentado un aumento del 614%", aunque he intentado confirmar esta información en Pinterest, no he podido encontrarla en ninguna parte, así que tendremos que creernos lo que dicen.

Querida gente de Pantone: La verdad es que me alegra profundamente deciros que os habéis equivocado, el color para 2023/24 no es el magenta ni el beige tristón sino el rojo! Y lo más probable es que luego pasemos al burdeos, el granate y azul el resto del año.

Who owns colour? Is it something that can be bought or sold, something that someone can call their own? There are many instances in popular culture where a particular colour has received a surname, such as shocking (as in Schiaparelli’s) pink, klein blue, or red valentino, the idea being that it is easier for us to locate the exact shade in our imaginations. But actually, many colours are trademarked; like the red in the soles of Louboutin shoes, the purple in Cadbury's wrappers or the blue for Tiffany’s packaging. 

The first colour was trademarked in 1985 in the US, effectively banning its use by competitor brands. This is a concept we're all used to today, but I was shocked to find out that Yves Klein registered his shade of blue in 1960 so that other artists weren’t allowed to use it in their work, which to a point I can understand but not agree with -banning its use only talks about his fear that someone might surpass him-, but what really surprised me is that Anish Kapoor did the same with a shade of black so deep that it doesn’t reflect light. I wonder what happened next, once Klein died, was this colour inherited by his family? Does this mean that this shade of blue will belong to them for good? The case for Kapoor’s black is even worse, let’s think about this for a second, colour is not a tangible thing but the way our eye perceives the interaction of a pigment with light, or as Pantone puts it

“Color is defined as the aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted by them. To see color, you have to have light. When light shines on an object some colors bounce off the object and others are absorbed by it. Our eyes only see the colors that are bounced off or reflected.”

Therefore, it is a sensation, an experience occurring in the eye, but these shades exist in nature, so if Mr Kapoor owns the colour that we imagine a black hole to have, does this mean that he believes the Universe should be paying him royalties?

Turns out that Pantone, the corporation whose definition above states clearly that colour is only a quality we see, but lives off selling its categorisation system, aiming at defining each year which colour is going to rule our lives (sometimes failing as I will later point out), has found a way of owning a big chunk of the colour palette, how? By joining forces with Adobe, another megacorporation that makes its profit by charging every month for the same program. If you are a graphic designer, for example, you now have to pay Pantone to use a whole range of colours on Adobe products such as inDesign or Photoshop. What initially started with a printing company that found a way to classify shades of colour so that brands could use the same one across their products, then evolved into the business of classifying colours and creating guides (which inexplicably change every year) and is now a mega emporium intending to become master of the f*cking universe regarding colour. This is how now we are immersed in a colonial system for colour, as in, ”If I identified it first, then I own it, nevermind that it existed for all to see before”. 

Enter , a British multidisciplinary artist and activist who felt that the idea of owning colour is ridiculous and decided to act on it, determined to give creatives back what has always belonged to them, the ability to use colour. In his online shop, Culture Hustle, he and his team create and sell the pigments that “belong” to those corporations all the while mocking them by changing their names to match the original ones. And so Tiffany’s Blue becomes Tiff Blue, Klein Blue is Easy Klein, and Viva Magenta (Pantene’s 2023 colour of the year) becomes Viva Meh-Genta, hilariously, Anish Kapoor whom he calls his arch nemesis is banned from his website and from buying his products, which are available for everyone else. One of his main kicks to the system was releasing Freetone, a free Adobe plugin that restores the colours no longer included with Adobe unless you pay Pantone.

Coming back to the Color of the Year subject, a few months ago their Viva Magenta reminded me a bit of Gucci’s new deep burgundy red, and I wondered if Pantone had actually nailed it, but when they released the new colour for 2024, called Peach Fuzz, a decidedly boring choice in orangy beige -I loved how Stuart Semple’s version is called Cheap Buzz- it got me thinking about how accurate these predictions truly are and how much they are done in connivance and/or competition with trend prediction companies like WGSN. At the end of the day, they do function as a self-fulfilling prophecy, with Pantone turning themselves into arbiters of taste and shifting the conversation towards what they say will be the trend. This creates media buzz that pushes creatives into using¡those colours, coming therefore full circle and actually transforming this prediction into a reality.

If there’s a colour that has been reigning supreme for the last few months and still is kicking hard (at least in inspiration world), that is red, a bright scarlet hue that seems to be everywhere. This is not a trend for the super young, though, they’re more into a grungy dusty grey; these weeks I have been working most of the time in the shops and it’s definitely a Millennial and older Gen Z fixation. But still, red is the colour that is everywhere. I have noticed as you probably might too, a massive surge of red in all of my feeds, from Instagram, to Pinterest, to the actual word on the street. According to Tagwalk, Red was the hottest colour in terms of searches in the platform during 2023, and according to Highsnobiety, the search for red tights outfits on Pinterest “has seen a rise of 614%”, I have tried to confirm this information on Pinterest but I couldn’t find it anywhere, so we’ll have to take their word for it. 

Dear people at Pantone: It makes me incredibly happy to say that you’ve got it wrong, the colour for 2023/24 is not magenta or bleak beige, it’s RED! And most likely, we’ll be moving into burgundy, maroon and blue towards the rest of the year.

Red has never been my favourite colour, except when mixed with pink or burgundy, but I’ve been really enjoying the way people have been interpreting it, how it gets incorporated into looks, editorials and general inspiration. I adore a blazer, but I particularly adore a woman wearing a big blazer. A few months ago I stumbled upon one painting by Frida Kahlo called Self Portrait With Cropped Hair. I was deeply moved. In it, Frida is wearing an oversized suit and crimson shirt, she is sitting on a chair, her legs half open and her hair cropped, strands of it fallen around her. In the painting we can read “Si alguna vez te quise fue por el pelo. Ahora que estás pelona ya no te quiero” (If ever I loved you, it was because of your hair. Now that you’ve cropped it, I don’t love you anymore), which is a popular poem with Spanish (or Latin American, it’s not clear) origin.

The story around the painting, dated from 1940 is that she painted it after her divorce from Diego Rivera. Frida is wearing what looks like one of her ex’s suits and shirt. In it, she portrays her sadness and trauma, but also a sense of freedom and agency. I love the way she looks at us from the painting. Apparently, it was also during this time that she vowed to become financially independent of Rivera by selling her paintings. One of the things that feel more powerful in this painting is the fact that she is wearing a suit to mark her independence, instead of her usually colourful, heavily decorated skirts and tops and red lips.

I did not know this painting, and when I recently found it I felt instantly drawn to it because one of the moments in my life in which I felt completely free and myself was when I cut my hair really short and started dressing like a boy, in particular, wearing oversized blazers. Looking at Frida Kahlo’s painting I totally understood: the suit, the hair, the verses, it is such freedom. While researching for this piece i found an interesting piece of information about the history of the blazers, there are quite a few theories about their origin, but the common thread was that it was originally used by fraternities of men, one of those used a fiery red one. So blazer comes from the word ablaze -to be on fire-. How serendipitous, that for a long time, for a woman to wear a blazer also signified that she was fiery independent, that she was ablaze in a way.  

Ever since I was child I was a girly girl, I loved a dress, a bow, pretty shoes, etcetera. I posed in pictures breaking my hip like a minisize adult model at 7.  As a teenager my body developed curves all over it, I had long blondish hair that I bleached and I went everywhere in high heels. I loved it, I was a woman! Soon enough though, I saw the downside of it, getting more attention that I could handle and plenty of situations in which I was downright objectified. It was a fixture in my life that often people celebrated my sexual appeal as if I wasn’t there. In all truth, I didn’t feel particularly attractive and something felt off, but I couldn’t really put my finger on it. Years later I came back to Madrid. I was recovering from a hard period and looking for new ways to express my real self, as this extra feminine thing had been keeping me hostage for way too long, but I still didn’t know what it was that I was looking for. By this time I was already very interested in mens ‘s fashion and I had always felt drawn to people that had androgynous looks and personalities, but with such deeply engrained femininity I felt that androgyny was out of bounds for me. 

One day while experimenting, my friend Ara cut my hair very short, leaving the blonde out of the equation for good and me looking like someone else. My body had changed again during this period, I had lost a lot of weight and therefore all my bothersome curves were gone, I started wearing masculine styles more confidently. Suddenly it all fell into place, I fell into place, finally feeling real and in peace. All it had taken for me to regain my sexuality, my sense of agency and my power was to move to the opposite side of the spectrum and adopt some external symbols of masculinity.  Dressing with the big shoulders, the square hips and the sleeked dark short hair allowed me to explore the things about me that felt beautiful and sexy to me for me, not society.  And it felt good!

Finally, our society is thankfully transitioning into a world where gender roles, power and sexuality are not defined anymore by what we wear, and sometimes we forget how fast this shift has happened. In time I have come to find a balance in which I can be as masculine or feminine as I like without having to rely on adopting specific codes of dressing and I fluctuate in my style with total freedom, but I can’t forget the feeling of possibility and joy of that period in which I blossomed into a boy in order to become myself.

Today, my hair is not short anymore but I still own and use more than 20 blazers regularly, and I often have to check myself because that’s the piece of clothing that I can never get enough of. I’ve been reflecting about what it is about a blazer that we love so much. On the one hand, they are everywhere, so much of a trend they’ve become; boxy, cinched, cropped, oversized, fitted or slouchy. It is, fashionista or not, a fixture in our wardrobes. Recently though, menswear has evolved and men seem to have let go of it while women find it inescapable. Do women love blazers because they offer comfort and refuge from the over analysis that their bodies endure on a daily basis? Or maybe because a blazer always looks good, professional and interesting? They are a symbol of status, but whereas for men they can represent the uniform that has historically taken much of their individuality away, for women it does the exact opposite.

It is interesting that many of its surges in female use have happened in parallel to women’s liberation; Coco Chanel created a suit in tweed (previously worn exclusively by men) to rid women from flimsy, unpractical and overly decorative clothing, so that they could drive, work and practise sports in freedom, then Yves Saint Laurent in 1966, together with the 2nd wave of feminism designed Le Smoking, making the trouser suit fashionable in mainstream terms, in the 80s, power dressing was everywhere, marking the beggining of women’s access to corporate management roles, and today, with the 4th wave of feminism, we can’t seem to be able to live without them. As much as it may cringe us, every time things have to change we reach for the blazer.

This recent blazer craze started by Demna’s Balenciaga for its fall 2016 collection paving the way for brands like Wardrobe NYC, Aeron or The Frankie Shop to inundate our feeds via the cloned influencer girl and the rise of minimalist fashion. 

Apart from the milestones, though, today I wanted to celebrate my icons, the women who dared to be their fiery selves and dress however they saw fit, paving the way for us, men or women, to do the same. Hail the Blazer Girl!

Me encantan las americanas, en particular, adoro a una mujer llevando una americana que le queda grande. Hace unos meses me encontré con el cuadro de Frida Kahlo, Autorretrato con Pelo Corto. Me conmovió profundamente. En él, Frida lleva un traje que le queda grande y una camisa carmesí, está sentada en una silla, con las piernas entreabiertas y los mechones de su pelo cortado, esparcidos por el suelo a su alrededor. En el cuadro se puede leer "Si alguna vez te quise fue por tu pelo. Ahora que estás pelona ya no te quiero".

La historia en torno al cuadro, fechado en 1940, es que lo pintó tras divorciarse de Diego Rivera. Frida lleva lo que parece un traje y camisa de su ex. Su tristeza y su dolor quedan patentes en el cuadro, pero también se trasluce una sensación de libertad y de ser dueña de la propia vida. Me encanta el modo en que nos mira. Al parecer, fue en esta época cuando se propuso independizarse económicamente de Rivera y vivir de la venta de sus cuadros. Una de las cosas que más poderosas me parecen de este cuadro es el hecho de que lleve un traje para marcar su independencia, en lugar de sus habituales faldas y blusas coloridas y muy decoradas y de sus labios rojos.

No conocía este cuadro, y cuando lo encontré hace poco me sentí atraída al instante porque uno de los momentos de mi vida en los que me he sentido completamente libre y yo misma fue cuando me corté el pelo muy corto y empecé a vestirme como un chico, en concreto, con americanas de hombre y unas cuantas tallas más grandes. Mirando el cuadro de Frida Kahlo la entendí totalmente: el traje, el pelo, los versos, y esa sensación de absoluta libertad. Mientras investigaba para esta pieza encontré un dato interesante sobre la historia de las americanas, hay bastantes teorías sobre su origen, pero el hilo conductor es que originalmente se usaban por hermandades de hombres, una de las cuales la llevaba en color rojo fuego. Así que Blazer viene de la palabra inglesa ablaze -o lo que es lo mismo, estar en llamas-. Qué casualidad que durante mucho tiempo, que una mujer llevase una americana también significaba que era muy independiente, y que en cierto modo estaba en llamas.  

De niña yo era súper femenina, me encantaban los vestidos, los lazos, los zapatos bonitos, etcétera. A los siete años posaba en las fotos sacando la cadera como una modelo adulta en miniatura. En la adolescencia a mi cuerpo le salieron curvas por todas partes, llevaba el pelo largo teñido de rubio platino, e iba a todos lados con tacones altos. Me encantaba, ¡era una mujer! Sin embargo, pronto me topé con la contrapartida: recibía más atención de la que sabía gestionar, encontrándome en muchas situaciones en las que acababa cosificada, a menudo la gente comentaba mi atractivo sexual como si yo no estuviese delante. Sin embargo, yo personalmente no me sentía especialmente atractiva y había algo que no encajaba, pero no podía precisar qué era. A mi vuelta a Madrid, años más tarde y en pleno proceso de recuperación de una etapa muy dura, buscaba nuevas formas de expresar un yo más auténtico para mí misma, ya que ese rol ultrafemenino me tenía secuestrada pero aún no sabía qué era lo que estaba buscando. Por aquel entonces, sin embargo, ya me interesaba la moda masculina y siempre me había atraído la gente de aspecto y personalidad andróginos. Pero con una feminidad tan arraigada como la mía sentía que la androginia se me iba a quedar para otra vida.

Un día, medio de casualidad, mi amiga Ara me cortó el pelo muy corto, sacando para siempre el rubio de la ecuación y haciéndome parecer otra persona. Para entonces, mi cuerpo había vuelto a cambiar, había perdido mucho peso y por lo tanto todas esas curvas molestas habían desaparecido, así que empecé a llevar un aspecto masculino con más confianza. De repente todo encajó para mí; me sentía en mi sitio y en paz or fin. Todo lo que había necesitado para recuperar mi sexualidad, mi sentido de mí misma y mi poder era posicionarme en el lado opuesto del espectro y adoptar algunos de los símbolos externos de masculinidad.  Vestirme con chaquetas de hombros grandes, caderas cuadradas y pelo corto engominado me permitió explorar aquello de mí misma que me parecía bello y sexy por y para mí, no para la sociedad. Me sentí tan bien…!

Afortunadamente, hoy estamos en un mundo en el que los roles de género, el poder y la sexualidad ya no vienen definidos por lo que llevamos puesto, y a veces se nos olvida lo rápido que se ha producido este cambio. Con el tiempo he llegado a encontrar un equilibrio en el que puedo ser tan masculina o femenina como me de la gana sin tener que depender de una idea de códigos específicos de género y voy y vengo en la fluidez de mi estilo con total libertad, pero no me olvido de la sensación de potencial y felicidad de ese periodo en el que me convertí en un chico para llegar a ser yo misma.

Hoy ya no llevo el pelo corto y he vuelto a mi rubio de toda la vida, pero sigo teniendo más de 20 americanas que uso a menudo, y normalmente tengo que controlarme porque esa es la prenda de la que nunca tengo suficientes. Por todo esto, he estado reflexionando sobre qué tienen las americanas que tanto nos gustan. Por un lado, el hecho de que están por todas partes y se han convertido en LA TENDENCIA: amplia, ceñida, corta, oversize, entallada o holgada, es, seamos fashionistas o no, un must en nuestros armarios. Pero últimamente con la evolución de la moda masculina, los hombres parecen haberla abandonado, mientras que las mujeres la encuentran ineludible. ¿Adoramos las americanas porque ofrecen comodidad y protección frente al análisis excesivo que nuestros cuerpos soportan a diario? ¿O tal vez porque una americana siempre queda bien, transmite profesionalidad y es interesante? Son un símbolo de estatus, pero mientras que para los hombres pueden representar el uniforme que históricamente eliminaba su individualidad, para las mujeres hace exactamente lo contrario.

Es interesante que el auge en el uso de la americana por parte de las mujeres se haya producido en paralelo a momentos claves de la liberación de la mujer; Coco Chanel creó un traje de tweed (que antes llevaban exclusivamente los hombres) para liberarlas de prendas incómodas, poco prácticas y excesivamente decorativas, de modo que pudieran conducir, trabajar y practicar deportes en libertad, en 1966 Yves Saint Laurent, al tiempo de la 2ª ola feminista, diseñó Le Smoking. En los años 80, el "power dressing" se pone de moda de la mano de Giorgio Armani, marcando el inicio del acceso de las mujeres a los puestos directivos en empresas, y hoy, con la 4ª ola del feminismo, parece que no podemos vivir sin ella. Por mucho que nos pueda molestar, cada vez que hay que cambiar las cosas echamos mano de la americana.

Esta reciente locura por la americana comenzó de la mano de Demna Gvasalia en Balenciaga con su colección de otoño 2016, allanando el camino para marcas como Wardrobe NYC, Aeron or The Frankie Shop que inundan nuestros feeds a través de la influencer clónica y la supremacía de la moda minimalista. Al margen de estos hitos, yo quiero hoy celebrar a mis iconos, a las mujeres que se atrevieron a arder y a vestir como les salió del moño, allanando el camino para que nosotr+s hiciéramos lo mismo. ¡Arriba la Blazer Girl!

Why do you love your clothes? Is it maybe because they represent a certain special moment in time? Maybe they had previously belonged to a loved one? Perhaps you found them unexpectedly and fell in love? Is it because of the way you feel when wearing them?

Ever since I was very young I’ve loved wearing clothes that had belonged to someone I loved or I had bought second hand. I was drawn to the memories, the personalities and stories they contained, and probably that was one of the influences for my choice of career, being fascinated at the richness of stories held in a piece of clothing, or maybe it was the other way round, when I understood the power of communication held in a garment. In my early twenties shopping felt like a treasure hunt, we had no money but we loved dressing up. A friend of mine introduced me to the concept of collecting, it wasn't related to designer clothes per se, but to special pieces we encountered in a charity shop, the bin or hanging from someone’s front gate, asking to be given a second chance. Another friend of mine used to raid the bags of donated clothes that were left at the doors of charity shops at night and gave me all the special things he found. He had great taste and I am a bit ashamed to say I was glad to keep them. Later, I inherited most of my grandmother’s coolest clothes, and ever since I was a teenager I have continuously raided my mum’s closet until I had kept for myself nearly everything she doesn’t wear anymore.

For years, I’ve visited flea markets, charity shops and second hand warehouses in search for that jewel nobody had noticed before and have found some really fantastic items: several pairs of cowboy boots that have walked the world with me, a number of antique kimonos, a hand embroidered cotton negligè that served as a dress, an angora cape in varying shades of blue, a Canadian jail overall in olive green, a peacock blue oversize trench with shoulder pads and innumerable pairs of men’s trousers… the list is big and I am shocked at how I’ve managed to keep so many clothes in my not so big house. The thing with these items is that they had to be treated with love and respect, otherwise they could break easily. Having said that, I also do buy many clothes that I don’t need, either second hand or new. I spend plenty of time shopping for obvious reasons, so I buy far more than I should. 

Lately I have been thinking about our consumption habits, about how clothing is more often than not a way in which our minds get back at life, as in “I have to deal with X, but I’ll treat myself with Z”. In a society like ours where overconsumption is the norm, the clothes we buy are not related anymore to the physical need for cover, but to an emotional need for validation. We buy and buy, often convinced by our conscious reasoning, but often hiding from ourselves the real reasons we actually buy stuff, clothes in particular. 

Right after the hardest lockdown months during the pandemic, one of the first shops to reopen in Madrid was the Primark flagship store. I was shocked to see massive queues of shoppers waiting for their turn to enter the store. I kept wondering what it is that one might need so much to queue in the street for hours after having spent three months sitting in our houses and in doubt of how long these intermittent lockdowns were yet going to last. Wouldn’t it be better going for a walk in the park? Leaving aside the fact that there might be something one really needs, I do believe that those queues were much more related to people’s need for entertainment and reward after such a hard time than about actually needing something.

Let me ask you, how many of your clothes do you really, really love? I am willing to bet that the ones that matter are the ones that fit within one of the categories mentioned at the beginning. The rest we don’t really care about, and more often than not, we’d be glad if we could just get rid of them, but getting rid of them is not a seamless act now with all the variables that we’re faced with. It could be argued that the quality of fashion recently is so poor that the clothes disintegrate after being worn a few times. This is true, but it is also true that when buying on impulse we don’t really buy with quality concerns at the centre of our purchase and we hardly ever consider the quality or materials, we focus on style, and yes, that pair of polyester soft trousers feel like cashmere and will be a lovely thing to wear (once), but they will be destroyed in no time.

There is also the matter of how little value we sometimes place on clothes that we buy on a whim, cheaply or not. As in, “It was 20€/$/£, if I only wear it twice it was more than worth it” or “I bought these on a terrible day, I don’t know what I was thinking” but cheap or unloved clothes doesn’t mean worthless: once in a landfill they’ll become a massive problem and moreover, have we ever thought about the person who made them? Do we think however cheap or unloved they might be today, they’re worthless for them?

Caring about our clothes doesn’t just mean wearing them with care, it means handling them with care, washing them less and learning ways to make sure they'll stay with me for many years. This includes the new stuff that I’ve also bought and isn’t always the best quality. Last year my beloved Walkers Appeal asked me to write a piece for their Journal, in which I looked at the many ways in which we can take good care of our loved clothes. When you care about something, you really want this thing to last,  and you want to be able to enjoy how you feel while wearing it. So I thought that this week, Instead of thinking about what I would buy, I might tell you about how I care for what I already bought. I’ve lightly edited it and copied it here for you:

THE 10 OR 12 COMMANDMENTS OF CLOTHING CARE

1. Symbols explained: Follow the instructions on the care label. The problem is, these symbols are akin to an Egyptian hieroglyph, so here is a very comprehensive guide courtesy of the Readers Digest.

2. Air your clothes out: Washing less will help protect your clothes, natural fibers like cotton stand regular washing better than linens or wool. The tear and wear that comes with washing can degrade the thickness of your clothes’ fibers, so spacing the washing times is a great ally to keep them looking beautiful for longer. Simply hang them outside for a few hours, and they’ll come back refreshed and free of smells.

3. 30ºC is your magic number: Set the washing machine temperature at 30ºC. If warmer you could damage the material and risk shrinkages or color transferring; if colder (and on a shorter cycle) your clothes could end up with soap stains from undiluted detergent.

If your clothes are very dirty, you could go for 40º but only if they’re Cotton or Tencel (Technically you can do it also with Wool, but it’s risky, so we wouldn’t recommend it).

4. Less detergent is more: Use as much as half of what the soap label states. Remember: you don’t want soap rings or stains in your clothes. Use quality, gentle, enzyme-free detergent for best results on delicate items made of Wool or Linen.

5. Tumble dry is a no-no: Unless you are in a really tight situation with drying times, we strongly recommend you do avoid the tumble dryer as each cycle will gradually damage the fibers in your clothes. Keep it in mind: the best tumble dry frequency for your clothes is as little as none.

6. Zip up: This might sound silly, but there’s no damage in reminding you. Close all zippers and fasteners before washing to prevent snagging and rough stretching during the washing cycle.

7. Delicate pieces in a bag: Use a mesh bag to wash those pieces that you really really don’t want to be damaged or that are long and might knot around the rest of the laundry, it will avoid snagging or stretching if caught hugging tightly other clothes.

8. Divide and conquer: Another basic one. Wash similar colors together to prevent color fading or transferring issues. If this is not possible, there are color transferring block tissue for sale in supermarkets, you could use one of those if you’re in an emergency and have to do a mixed wash.

9. Flat is better: Of course, this will depend on your available space, but flat drying is better for Wool and Tencel. If you’re not able to do so, gently spin these fabrics to have them release as much moisture as possible, then hang them from a part of the garment that won’t stretch. Note: when spinning Wool, reduce it to a minimum speed.

10. Soak wool first: If you’re washing Wool in the washing machine, soak it in cold water thoroughly before you add it to your laundry. This will protect your garment.

(A couple of extra tips)

11. Store your clothes as far away as you can from dust (use dust bags), natural light, and damp environments. This will enlarge the lifespan of your favorite ones and keep them looking as new for years to come.

12. Using a lint brush before storing your jackets and suits will keep them spotless. Unless you have a steely touch, the use of fabric shavers to remove pills should be very sparse, since the fibers in your clothes can end up damaged.

¿Por qué te gusta tu ropa? ¿Quizá porque representa un momento especial en el tiempo? ¿Tal vez le perteneció a un ser querido? ¿Quizá lo encontraste inesperadamente y te enamoraste? ¿Es por cómo te sientes cuando lo llevas puesto?

Desde que era muy joven me ha encantado llevar ropa vintage, quizá cosas que habían pertenecido a alguien querido o que he comprado de segunda mano… siempre me han llamado la atención los recuerdos, las personalidades y las historias que contenían. Es probable que esa fuese una de las razones que me influyeron a elegir mi carrera, o quizá fuese al revés, al entender el poder de comunicación de la ropa aprendí más a apreciar la riqueza de historias que habita en una prenda de vestir. Cuando tenía veinte años, ir de compras era como ir a la caza del tesoro, no teníamos dinero pero nos encantaba vestirnos. Una amiga me introdujo en el concepto de coleccionismo, no relacionado con la ropa de diseño en sí, sino con piezas especiales que encontrábamos en las charities de Londres, en la basura o colgadas de la puerta de casa de alguien, pidiendo a gritos una segunda oportunidad. Otro amigo mío solía asaltar por la noche las bolsas de ropa donada que quedaban a las puertas de las tiendas de caridad y me regalaba todas las cosas especiales que encontraba. Tenía muy buen gusto y me da un poco de vergüenza contaros que me las quedaba tan feliz. Más tarde, heredé la mayor parte de la ropa de mi abuela, que en general era muy especial, y desde que era adolescente he asaltado continuamente el armario de mi pobre madre hasta que me he quedado con casi todo lo que ella ya no se pone y con algunas de las cosas que todavía se ponía.

Durante años, he ido a mercadillos, tiendas de caridad y almacenes de segunda mano en busca de ese tesoro en el que nadie se había fijado antes y he encontrado algunas piezas realmente fantásticas: varios pares de botas vaqueras que han caminado por el mundo conmigo, kimonos antiguos, un camisón de algodón bordado a mano que hacía las veces de vestido, una capa de angora en distintos tonos de azul y morado, un mono de presidiario canadiense en verde oliva, un trench oversize azul pavo real con hombreras e innumerables pares de pantalones de hombre... la lista es grande y lo que de verdad me sorprende es cómo he conseguido guardar tanta ropa en mi casa. Estas prendas hay que tratarlas con cariño y respeto, de lo contrario podrían romperse fácilmente. Dicho esto, también he comprado y compro mucha ropa que no necesito, ya sea de segunda mano o nueva. Paso mucho tiempo en las tiendas por razones obvias, y claro, compro mucho más de lo que debería.

Últimamente he estado pensando bastante en nuestros hábitos de consumo, en cómo las compras son la mayoría de las veces una forma en que nuestra mente se desquita de la vida: "Como tengo que lidiar con X me voy a dar un capricho con Z". Formamos parte de una sociedad en la que el consumo excesivo es la norma, la ropa que compramos ya no está relacionada con la necesidad física de cubrirnos, sino con una necesidad emocional de validación. Compramos y compramos, a menudo convencidos por nuestros razonamientos conscientes, pero a menudo ocultándonos a nosotr+s mism+s las verdaderas razones por las que realmente compramos cosas, en particular la ropa.

Justo después de los meses más duros de cuarentena durante la Pandemia, una de las primeras tiendas en reabrir fue la insignia de Primark en Madrid. Me sorprendió  muchísimo ver colas enormes de comprador+s esperando su turno para entrar en la tienda. Mi pregunta era qué es lo que uno puede necesitar tanto para hacer cola en la calle durante horas después de haber pasado tres meses sentados en casa; y sin saber aún cuánto más iban a durar estos cierres intermitentes. ¿No sería mejor darse un paseo por el parque? Aparte del hecho de que pueda haber algo que un+ necesite de verdad, creo que esas colas estaban mucho más relacionadas con la necesidad de entretenimiento y de recompensa de esas personas después de un tiempo tan duro que con la necesidad real de comprar algo

Puedo preguntarte, ¿cuántas de tus prendas te gustan de verdad? Estoy segura de que las que de verdad importan encajan en alguna de las categorías mencionadas al principio. El resto no nos importa realmente, y la mayoría de las veces sería un alivio si pudiéramos deshacernos de ellas, pero deshacerse de ellas no es un acto sencillo ahora con todas las variables a las que nos enfrentamos. Se podría argumentar que la calidad de la moda es tan mala últimamente que la ropa se desintegra después de usarla unas cuantas veces. Esto es cierto, pero también lo es que, cuando compramos por impulso, no lo hacemos teniendo en cuenta la calidad de la prenda o los materiales, sino que nos centramos en el estilo, y sí, ese par de pantalones de poliéster suave parecen de cashmere y serán preciosos (una vez), pero en poco tiempo estarán destrozados.

También está la cuestión del poco valor que a veces damos a la ropa que compramos por capricho, barata o no. Un par de ejemplos: "Costaba 20€/$/£, con que sólo me lo ponga dos veces ya mereció la pena" o "Me lo compré en un día horrible, no sé en qué estaba pensando", pero que una prenda sea barata o no nos guste no significa que no valga nada: una vez en llegue al vertedero se convertirá en un problema enorme, además, ¿hemos pensado alguna vez en las personas que las confeccionaron? ¿Pensamos que por muy baratas o poco queridas que sean hoy, no valen nada para ell+s?

Cuidar nuestra ropa no sólo significa llevarla con mimo, sino tratarla con cuidado, lavarla menos y aprender maneras de asegurarse de que me acompañará durante muchos años. Esto incluye las cosas nuevas que he comprado y que no siempre son de la mejor calidad. El año pasado escribí un artículo que me pidieeron desde Walkers Appeal para su Journal, en el que analizaba las muchas maneras en que se pueden cuidar las prendas que amamos, porque cuando algo te importa, realmente quieres que dure y quieres poder disfrutar de cómo te sientes mientras lo llevas puesto. Así que he pensado que esta semana, en lugar de pensar en lo que me compraría, podría hablaros de cómo cuido lo que ya me he comprado. Aquí os lo dejo para que podáis leerlo.

LOS 10 Ó 12 MANDAMIENTOS DEL CUIDADO DE LA ROPA

1. Explicación de los símbolos: Sigue las instrucciones de la etiqueta de cuidado. El problema es que estos símbolos se parecen a un jeroglífico egipcio, así que aquí tienes una guía muy completa cortesía del Readers Digest.

2. Airea la ropa: Lavar menos ayudará a proteger tu ropa, las fibras naturales como el algodón aguantan mejor que el lino o la lana los lavados frecuentes. El desgaste que conlleva cada lavado puede degradar el grosor de las fibras de tu ropa, por lo que espaciar los lavados es un gran aliado para mantenerla bonita durante más tiempo. Simplemente cuélgalas al aire libre durante unas horas, y volverán frescas y libres de olores.

3. 30 es tu número mágico: Pon la temperatura de la lavadora a 30ºC. Si la temperatura es más alta podrías dañar el material y arriesgarte a que se encoja o se transfiera el color; si es más fría (y en un ciclo más corto) tu ropa podría acabar con manchas de jabón por detergente sin diluir.

Si tu ropa está muy sucia, podrías ir a 40º pero sólo si es Algodón o Tencel (Técnicamente puedes hacerlo también con Lana, pero es arriesgado, así que no te lo recomendamos).

4. Menos detergente es más: Utiliza hasta la mitad de lo que indique la etiqueta del jabón si no quieres rodetes de jabón ni manchas en la ropa. Utiliza detergente de calidad, suave y sin enzimas para obtener los mejores resultados en prendas delicadas de lana o lino.

5. La secadora no es tu amiga: A menos que necesites la ropa para ya, te recomendamos que evites la secadora, ya que cada ciclo dañará gradualmente las fibras. Tenlo en cuenta: la mejor frecuencia de secado en secadora para su ropa es ninguna.

6. Sube la cremallera: Puede parecer una tontería, pero no está de más recordártelo. Cierra todas las cremalleras y cierres antes de lavar para evitar enganches y estiramientos bruscos durante el ciclo de lavado.

7. Piezas delicadas en una bolsa: Utiliza una bolsa de red para lavar aquellas piezas que realmente no quieres que se estropeen o que son largas y podrían anudarse alrededor del resto de la colada, así evitarás que se enganchen o se estiren.

8. Divide y vencerás: Otro básico. Lave los colores similares juntos para evitar problemas de desteñido o transferencia de color. Si esto no es posible, en los supermercados hay toallitas antitransferencia de color; puedes usar una si te encuentras en una situación de emergencia y tienes que hacer un lavado mixto.

9. Lo plano es bello: Por supuesto, esto dependerá de tu espacio disponible, pero el secado en plano es mejor para la lana y el Tencel. Si no puedes hacerlo, haz un centrifugado suave para que suelten toda la humedad posible y luego cuélgalos de una parte de la prenda que no se estire. Nota: cuando centrifugues Lana, redúcelo a la velocidad mínima.

10. Remoja primero la lana: Si vas a lavar Lana en la lavadora, remójala bien en agua fría antes de añadirla a la colada. Así protegerá tu prenda.

11. Guarda tus prendas lo más lejos posible del polvo (utiliza bolsas para el polvo), la luz natural y los ambientes húmedos. Esto alargará la vida útil de tus prendas favoritas y las mantendrá como nuevas durante años.

12. Utilizar un cepillo para pelusas antes de guardar sus chaquetas y trajes los mantendrá impecables. A no ser que tengas un pulso de acero, el uso del quita bolitas de tejidos debe ser muy escaso, ya que las fibras de tu ropa pueden acabar dañadas.

I don’t really dig dolls, not anymore; I remember playing with them, inventing stories in which they were free, living their own, fierce independent lives. They worked, they had careers, they went out partying and they had no male dolls around. I don’t know why, maybe because I don't have brothers and neither I nor my sister ever got given a male doll, at least none over 10 cm, so guys were not included in the fabulous lives  my dolls were leading. In popular culture dolls function as extensions of us, so even if my dolls were free and feisty, someone else’s dolls might be something else. And that’s my quarrel with them as an archetype, much as I wanted mine to be their own free, independent selves, they were an extension of me, in the same way that the dolls at Galliano (notice I don’t use the term Margiela) or Marc Jacobs are an extension of them. I can already hear you saying, if this is another critique of Galliano’s show for Margiela I’m going to jump out the window. Let me reassure you, it is not, but of course it is. I’ve spent the past week, like I guess many of you, immersed in the voices of countless critics and fashion aficionados talking about the vastness of feeling that Couture Week, or rather, Galliano’s latest Artisanal collection for Margiela has given them. And although I’m not interested in poring over the show itself, I am really intrigued by the reactions it has garnered. I’ve drafted some questions with the idea of trying to offer some theories on them. Since this space is as much mine as it is yours, my dear misfits, feel free to chip in your points of view.

So what is different about this particular Couture Week?

To begin with, the fact that it has made so much noise, not only because Galliano seems to have come full circle in his life and left all his reservations (and Margiela’s house codes) for another life, but also because this week has clearly spelled the very moment that fashion is experiencing right now. To the right of the court, the sensible, little ornamental but fabulous couture for everyday life, exquisitely made but quiet -and minimal- pieces with Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior carrying the flag and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino, albeit with very bold colours, running along, to the left, the drama team with Alaïa by Pieter Mulier (technically not couture), Schiaparelli by Daniel Rosenberry, Jean Paul Gaultier by Simone Rocha and Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano.

We have seen a comment on today’s technology via a baby robot, plenty of inclusive femininity embodied by ethereal ribbons and tulle in a game of strength and vulnerability, masterfully architectural and technically mind blowing pieces, plus Galliano virally coming back to himself, referencing Margiela half-heartedly in an unapologetic return to his obsessions, his silhouettes and his characters in the margins with the invaluable help of Pat McGrath’s genius in the make up department. 

It is also notable that a fashion week which has stayed fairly expendable in terms of its ability to take the street temperature, has now managed to come to the front scene in full force. Overall, this signals two important things: One, both Pieter Mulier and Galliano’s couture collections have been developed over the past 12 months, which points to the fact that once given enough time to prepare and deep dive creatively into the story or the concept they want to work with, a designer can really achieve mastery. Therefore, maybe the reason the fashion world has been complaining of a lack of inspiration could be directly linked to a fashion system that places profit over value, imposing maddening deadlines of innumerable collections on designers and leaving them empty of the kind of ideas that make the fashion history books. The other, considering how these four collections have been received by the public, is that society might be ready for a change of scenery, demanding to regain a sense of fantasy and showstopping glamour in fashion.

And what about all the hailing of Galliano as a god again?

I need to come clean, I didn’t love the show, I mean, I loved it and I didn't, which is strange because if you give me Tim Burton anyday, I’ll enjoy it massively, and because if there’s one thing I appreciate is a good story, specially about a bunch of misfits. For me, Galliano’s work has always felt slightly bittersweet. I've been thinking about the reasons for this, and the answer that sums up my feelings more accurately was given by Lee McQueen when asked what was the difference between him and Galliano:

“John is more fluid and romantic, he has a great vision for romanticising his ideal woman […], I really care about a woman’s independence. I don’t like her to look so naive and so fragile.”  

So there, my problem with Galliano is exactly that, many women are going to feel empowered by his vision, but I just don’t, and when I see these life sized dolls, walking down the runway, sometimes looking like discombobulated zombies, it spoils all the fun for me. I don’t want to look like a doll but the fact that many other women do is just perfect for them. On top of that, the praise that I’ve been reading online, with outbursts such as “The king is alive and well. And living among the mortals” give me the creeps, because Galliano came crashing down with the king’s suit on while going through terrible burn out. I do think he is a genius and I do love a lot of what he has done over the years but precisely because of my memory of his shows, I had a distinct feeling of dejà-vu, of seeing something amazing but not that original. Which brings me to my next question:

Why are people so emotionally touched by this show?

I think that younger audiences have been for a while craving the creative high that the iconic Margiela, Galliano or McQueen’s shows of the past used to deliver, that’s why the massive leon head brooches at Schiaparelli and Coperni’s stunts with technology have gone viral. But not only young audiences, fashion ones too have missed those perfect moments when a show really touches an emotional chord.

But for that kind of connection, there is a certain level of wild creativity that has to be unleashed, and with it the risk of being criticised, misunderstood or worse, cancelled. In this climate such unapologetic originality has felt like a perilous choice. Nevertheless, these same younger generations strive everyday to have their own unique voices and personas heard, living thus an inescapable personal conflict.

As we grapple with a world that comes safely ensconced within the never ending flow of highly curated and politically correct images in our screens, attaining that level of emotion is not easy. Therefore, we as a society dare less and less to stand out, but are delighted when guidance comes, opening the door to inspiration and entertainment without us having to bold it through before anyone else.

Does this mean that we can finally say goodbye to minimalism? Are terms like understated elegance and subtle sophistication going out the window? 

The truth is that although it was quite recently that tik tok came up with the quiet luxury trend name, normcore has been taking our wardrobes hostage since 2013, evolving to the point where minimalism today has so many names that not even its own mother could recognize it, but the fact is that right when we gave it one of its boldest ones we seem finally able to let it go. Why? Maybe because of its ubiquity, there’s way too many brands making insane amounts of money out of a set of pieces that say nothing and mean nothing. 

Fashion people will entertain a trend, any trend, as long as it’s fun and they can remain the very few wearing it, but when out of 30 people in the metro/tube/bus/ a party of 25 are dressed suspiciously similar, the fun evaporates. Also, minimalism is not one of the boldest trends in the drama department, it’s all about shape, effortlessness and quality, which although being really desirable qualities in a piece of clothing, there’s so many camel oversize blazers one can own. So, are we kinda bored? Maybe.

The proverbial pendulum is swinging to the opposite side of the spectrum and it’s quite understandable because minimalism is the sort of trend favoured mostly by those that consume fashion [disclaimer: gross generalisation coming… allow me, just to put my point across] because they need to get efficiently dressed but don’t necessarily live and breathe fashion (Succession anyone?). With minimalism usually come the appreciation of things like craftsmanship, design, comfort, practicality and feel of a garment, but not necessarily the drama of fashion. 

For good reason then, some of the big bosses might surely be tuning the antennas in, because if the trend is to favour a uniform, how does an industry based on exponentially multiplying its profits each year is going to keep selling clothes ad infinitum? With that in mind, it seems that the time for drama and storytelling at which Galliano so brilliantly excels, might finally have come. 

Much as we can love the texture of a cashmere cardigan or the exquisite cut on a cold wool pair of trousers, the unique deep blue hue of a silk sweater, and believe me, I do and I have, it’s the special pieces, the ones that you just can’t forget about and that capture our imagination, that leave us wanting for more. I’ll give an example, the other day I bought a pair golden boots that I had fallen in love with (I used to own another pair that I foolishly gave away with the rise of normcore). When I was trying these boots with different outfits I realised I now had space for more narratives in my wardrobe, pieces like a semi transparent pink nightgown or a soft tan brown leather waistcoat that I had bought and kept without using -because they seemed too bold or loud- suddenly felt at home with these boots and so did I. So it’s not only about a corset or a see through pair of trousers, we’ve had plenty of those already, it’s about the joy that some drama and storytelling can add. It’s about feeling a million dollars, and of course we can feel that way wearing the softest fabrics and the best cut pieces, but maybe after 10 years, we’ve had enough.

Considering the noise surrounding these Haute Couture Shows it might be concluded that we no longer care that the models look like dolls, let us be dolls if it means we’ll have fun.   That’s all from me this weekend, misfits, I hope you had a great one! No me gustan las muñecas, la verdad. Recuerdo jugar con ellas, inventar historias en las que eran libres, vivían sus propias vidas, ferozmente independientes. Trabajaban, tenían carreras, salían de fiesta y no tenían muñecos masculinos cerca. No sé por qué, quizá porque como no tengo hermanos y ni a mi hermana ni a mí nos regalaron nunca un muñeco masculino, excepto los clicks pero eran muy bajitos, así que los chicos no estaban nunca incluidos en las fabulosas vidas que llevaban nuestras muñecas. En la cultura popular éstas funcionan como extensiones de nosotr+s, así que aunque mis muñecas fueran libres y luchadoras, las de otra persona podrían ser otra cosa. Y esa es mi disputa con el arquetipo de muñeca, por mucho que yo quisiera que las mías fueran su propio yo libre e independiente, eran una extensión de mí, del mismo modo que las muñecas de Galliano (fijaros que no digo Margiela) o Marc Jacobs son una extensión de ellos. Ya os estoy oyendo pensar, si esto es otra crítica del desfile de Galliano para Margiela voy a saltar por la ventana. Os tranquilizo, no lo es, pero por supuesto en parte sí lo es. Me he pasado la semana pasada, como supongo que muchos de vosotr+s, inmersa en las voces de innumerables crític+s y aficionad+s hablando de la inmensidad de sensaciones que les ha producido la Semana de la Costura, o mejor dicho, la última colección Artisanal de Galliano para Margiela. Y aunque no me interesa profundizar en el desfile en sí, sí que me intrigan las reacciones que ha suscitado. Planteo algunas preguntas para tratar de ofrecer algunas teorías al respecto. Como este espacio es tanto mío como vuestro, querid+s inadaptad+s, no dudéis en aportar vuestros puntos de vista.

¿Qué tiene de diferente esta Semana de la Costura?

Para empezar, el hecho de que haya hecho tanto ruido, no sólo porque Galliano parece haber completado un círculo en su vida, dejando sus reservas (y los códigos de Maison Margiela) para otra vida, sino también porque esta semana marca claramente el momento mismo que  la moda está atravesando. A la derecha de la pista, la alta costura sensata, poco ornamental pero fabulosa pensada para la vida cotidiana, piezas exquisitamente confeccionadas pero tranquilas -y minimalistas-, con el Dior e Maria Grazia Chiuri que llevaba la bandera y el Valentino de Pierpaolo Piccioli, que aunque con colores muy atrevidos, se suma a la tendencia, a la izquierda, el equipo del drama con Alaïa por Peter Mullier (técnicamente este no es costura), Schiaparelli por Daniel Rosenberry, el Jean Paul Gaultier de Simone Rocha y el Margiela Artisanal de John Galliano.

Hemos visto una reflexión sobre la tecnología actual a través de un bebé robot, mucha feminidad inclusiva encarnada por cintas etéreas y tul en un juego de fuerza y vulnerabilidad, piezas magistralmente arquitectónicas y técnicamente alucinantes, además de a Galliano volviendo viralmente a sí mismo, haciendo referencia a Margiela con pocas ganas en un regreso sin complejos a sus obsesiones, sus siluetas y sus personajes en los márgenes, con la inestimable ayuda de la genialidad de Pat McGrath en el departamento de maquillaje.

También es notable que una semana de la moda que se ha mantenido bastante prescindible en cuanto a su capacidad para tomar la temperatura de la calle, haya conseguido ahora salir a la palestra con toda su fuerza. En general, esto indica dos cosas importantes: Una, las colecciones de Peter Mulier y  Galliano se han desarrollado a lo largo de los últimos 12 meses, lo que apunta al hecho de que, una vez que se les da tiempo suficiente para preparar y profundizar creativamente en la historia o el concepto con el que quieren trabajar, un+ diseñador+ puede alcanzar realmente la maestría. Por lo tanto, tal vez la razón por la que el mundo de la moda se ha estado quejando de falta de inspiración podría estar directamente relacionada con un sistema que antepone el beneficio al valor, imponiendo a l+s diseñador+s plazos enloquecedores, con innumerables colecciones y dejándole+s vacíos del tipo de ideas que llegan a los libros de historia de la moda. La otra, teniendo en cuenta la acogida que han tenido estas cuatro colecciones entre el público, es que la sociedad podría estar preparada para un cambio de aires, exigiendo recuperar el sentido de la fantasía y el glamour en la moda.

¿Y qué pasa con todos los que aclaman a Galliano como un dios?

Tengo que ser sincera, desde el punto de vista de la narrativa, a mi la colección no me ha vuelto loca, quiero decir, me encantó y no me encantó, lo cual es extraño porque si me das a Tim Burton cualquier día, a mí me gusta, y porque si hay algo que aprecio es una buena historia, especialmente sobre un grupo de inadaptad+s. Para mí, el trabajo de Galliano siempre ha tenido un tinte agridulce. He estado pensando en las razones de ello, y la respuesta que resume mejor mis sentimientos la dio Lee McQueen cuando le preguntaron cuál era la diferencia entre él y Galliano:

"John es más fluido y romántico, tiene una gran visión para romantizar a su mujer ideal [...], a mí me importa mucho la independencia de una mujer. No me gusta que parezca tan ingenua y tan frágil".  

Mi problema con Galliano es exactamente ése: muchas mujeres se sentirán empoderadas por su visión, pero yo no, y cuando veo esas muñecas a tamaño real, caminando por la pasarela, a veces con aspecto de zombis desconcertados, se me agua la fiesta. No quiero parecerme a una muñeca, pero muchas otras mujeres sí y me parece perfecto si es lo que les apetece. Además, los elogios que he aqleído en Internet, con frases como "El rey está vivo y coleando. Y viviendo entre los mortales" me ponen los pelos de punta, porque Galliano se hundió precisamente con el traje de rey puesto en plena crisis de agotamiento. Sin embargo, estoy de acuerdo en  que es un genio y me encanta mucho de lo que ha hecho a lo largo de los años, pero precisamente por el recuerdo de sus desfiles, con este último tuve una sensación de dejà-vu, de ver algo increíble pero no tan original. Lo que me lleva a la siguiente pregunta:

¿Por qué la gente está tan emocionada con este desfile?

Creo que el público más joven lleva tiempo ansiando el subidón creativo que ofrecían desfiles icónicos del pasado como los de Margiela, Galliano o McQueen, por eso los broches enormes con forma de cabeza de león de Schiaparelli y las acrobacias tecnológicas de Coperni se han hecho virales. Pero no sólo el público joven, también el de la moda ha echado de menos esos momentos perfectos en los que un desfile nos da de lleno en la fibra sensible.

Pero para lograr ese tipo de conexión, hay que dar rienda suelta a un cierto nivel de creatividad salvaje, y con ello asumir el riesgo de ser criticado, malinterpretado o, peor aún, cancelado. En este clima, presentar con una originalidad sin remordimientos se antoja una opción peligrosa. Sin embargo, estas mismas generaciones jóvenes luchan cada día por hacer oír sus voces y personalidades únicas, viviendo así un conflicto personal ineludible.

A medida que nos enfrentamos a un mundo colocadito a salvo dentro del flujo interminable de imágenes altamente comisariadas y políticamente correctas en nuestras pantallas, alcanzar ese nivel de emoción no es fácil. Por eso, como sociedad nos atrevemos cada vez menos a destacar, pero nos alegramos cuando llega alguien dispuesto a liderar el camino, abriendo la puerta a la inspiración y el entretenimiento sin que tengamos que atrevernos a nosotros a romper esa barrera primero.

¿Significa esto que por fin podemos decir adiós al minimalismo? ¿Están desapareciendo términos como elegancia discreta y sofisticación sutil?

Lo cierto es que aunque hace muy poco que tik tok dio con el nombre de tendencia de lujo tranquilo, Normcore lleva desde 2013 tomando nuestros armarios como rehenes, evolucionando hasta el punto de que el minimalismo tiene ahora tantos nombres que ni su propia madre podría reconocerlo, pero lo cierto es que justo cuando le dimos uno de sus nombres más precisos, parece que por fin podemos dejarlo marchar. ¿Por qué? Quizá porque está por todas partes, hay incontables marcas ganando cantidades demenciales de dinero a base de vender piezas que no dicen nada ni significan nada.

La gente a la que le interesa la moda se atreve con cualquier tendencia, siempre y cuando sea divertida y puedan seguir estando entre l+s poc+s que la llevan, pero cuando de cada 30 personas en el metro/autobús/la sala, un+s 25 van vestid+s sospechosamente parecid+s, la diversión se evapora. Además, el minimalismo no es una de las tendencias más atrevidas, ya que todo gira en torno a la forma, la elegancia sin esfuerzo y la calidad, que aunque son cualidades esenciales en una prenda de vestir, hay un punto en el que realmente no necesitas otra americana oversize en camel. Entonces, ¿estamos un poco aburrid+s? Es muy posible.

El péndulo se está moviendo hacia el lado opuesto del espectro y es bastante comprensible, porque este minimalismo que nos asola es el tipo de tendencia preferida por aquellos [nota: voy a hacer una mega generalización, no me lo tengáis en cuenta, es para explicar mi teoría] que consumen moda porque necesitan vestirse de forma eficiente, pero que realmente no viven por y para la moda (¿alguien se acuerda de Sucesión?). Con el minimalismo es posible apreciar aspectos como la artesanía, el diseño, la comodidad, la practicidad y el tacto de una prenda, pero no necesariamente la narrativa o teatralidad del vestir. Y es muy posible que algunos de los grandes magnates seguramente estén sintonizando las antenas, porque si la tendencia es favorecer el uniforme, ¿cómo van a seguir vendiendo ropa ad infinitum una industria que insiste en multiplicar exponencialmente sus beneficios cada año? Así las cosas, parece que por fin ha llegado el momento del drama y de la narración, en los que tan brillantemente destaca Galliano.

Por mucho que nos guste la textura de un cárdigan de cashmere, el corte exquisito de un pantalón de lana fría, o el singular tono azul petróleo de un jersey de seda, y creedme, a mí me gusta y me ha gustado, son las prendas especiales, las que no podemos olvidar y que capturan nuestra imaginación, las que nos dejan con ganas de más. Pondré un ejemplo, el otro día compré unas botas doradas de las que me había enamorado (antes tenía otro par que regalé tontamente con el auge del citado normcore). Cuando las probé con diferentes conjuntos, me di cuenta de que ahora tenía espacio para más historias en mi armario. Piezas como un camisón rosa semitransparente o un chaleco de napa marrón tabaco que había comprado y guardado sin usar -porque me parecían demasiado chillones- de repente estaban como en casa con estas botas, y yo también. Así que no se trata sólo de un corsé o de unos pantalones transparentes, de eso ya hemos tenido bastante, se trata de la alegría que puede añadir a nuestra ropa un poco de drama y de narrativa. Se trata de sentirse lo más, y por supuesto que podemos sentirnos así llevando los tejidos más suaves y las prendas mejor cortadas, pero quizá después de 10 años, ya hayamos tenido suficiente.

Teniendo en cuenta el ruido que ha rodedo a estos desfiles de Alta Costura, podría concluirse que ya no nos importa que las modelos parezcan muñecas, seamos muñecas si eso significa que nos vamos a divertir.

La semana pasada estuve en Londres, y pensé que estaría bien compartir algunas de las cosas que pasaron y algunos lugares especiales que descubrí. Me encanta perderme cuando voy a los sitios y coger pequeños desvíos que me llevan a lugares inesperados. Esta ciudad es un segundo hogar para mí y, después de vivir en ella la mayor parte de la década de mis veinte, sigo yendo tan a menudo como puedo. Mi idea original para este post era compartir con vosotros algunos de mis lugares y cosas favoritas que hacer en Londres, pero como la semana resultó tener ideas propias (¿no las tienen todas?), se mezcló con un montón de recuerdos, y un tiempo de perros. Aunque voy a compartir algunos lugares geniales hay antísimos que se quedan en el tintero… los guardaré para futuros posts. Aquí os dejo un trocito de mi Londres:

Ladrillos que no dejan ver el bosque

El día empezó un poco a lo loco, la línea Jubilee del metro me recordaba a una versión destruida y mal iluminada de los pasillos y paredes de la nave espacial Odisea del Espacio de Kubrick. Al principio pensaba ir al Barbican a ver la biblioteca, pero el día era tan bonito que en vez de eso me fui a dar un paseo por el Puente de Londres, y acabé en The White Cube. Esta galería tiene ahora sedes en todo el mundo, pero hace años era exactamente eso, un cubo blanco en Hoxton Square, donde en 2004 vi una de esas exposiciones que se me quedaron grabadas para siempre: se trataba de una serie de retratos de actores famosos realizados por Sam Taylor-Johnson (entonces Taylor-Wood) llamada Crying Men. (Hombres Llorando). En la actualidad, el White Cube tiene dos sedes en Londres, una en Green Park y otra en Bermondsey, donde caí yo y vi Body Politic, de Antony Gromley. En la zona principal había una serie de esculturas mínimalistas hechas con metal oxidado o ladrillos, que tengo que la verdad, no me mataron. Luego entré en una sala llena de formaciones de ladrillo que recordaba a un yacimiento antiguo como un castro de ladrillos rojos, tardé un rato pero de repente vi una figura tumbada, luego otra y otra, cada una en posiciones diferentes. Lo que parecía un mar de ladrillos se convirtió en una serie de figuras humanas descansando (o robóticas si tenemos en cuenta la forma) y haciendo yoga por todas partes. Fue bastante mágico ver la transformación. Supongo que es un poco como la vida, no ves nada y de repente: ¡bum!

Un poco más abajo, en la Morocco St., me topé con una pequeña librería-y entré. Era el tipo de sitio que me gusta a mí, con una buena selección de libros de arte, moda y novelas independientes. De algunos de los libros colgaban etiquetas con notas personales de recomendación. Qué buena idea! Es genial para l+s escritor+s, pero también para l+s comprador+s, que a lo mejor no tienen ganas de charlar con l+s librer+s, pero les apetece saber su opinión.

Más tarde, crucé Borough Market para dar mi paseo ritual por el Southbank, mi favorito de los favoritos, lo que nunca dejo de hacer cuando estoy en Londres. Me encantan los viejos edificios de los muelles, con sus ventanas largas y sus grúas, pintados de azules y grises, el Támesis con la catedral de San Pablo al otro lado, la Tate Modern (donde compré un librito fantástico de Michaela Coel: Misfits. A Personal Manifesto, [Inadaptad+s: Un manifiesto personal] me pareció tan apropiado que no pude resistirme a comprarlo), y el BFI, (la filmoteca), que esa noche proyectaba Pink Flamingos, de John Waters. Justo enfrente del BFI y bajo el puente de Waterloo hay un mercadillo de libros de segunda mano, al que me encanta ir para encontrar libros-joya, pero ese día sólo estaban abiertos un par de puestos, así que no hubo más hallazgos interesantes. Luego tuve una batalla estratégica y silenciosa con una señora de pelo rosa, peinado con un lazo rosa y vestido oversize de tul rosa (igual estaba allí para ver Pink Flamingos?) por la única mesa disponible junto a la ventana de la cafetería del BFI con vistas al río, y gané, así que me senté allí y escribí durante un rato, terminando mi carta de desamor a Helmut Newton y dándome cuenta de que por primera vez en meses, escribir me estaba resultando fácil.

SÁBADO

El bono transportes perdido antes y el de ahora

El día anterior, de camino a casa, me di cuenta de que había perdido mi tarjeta semanal de transporte. Menuda rabia! Siempre que voy a Londres me quedo con una de mis amigas más queridas, y pasar tiempo juntas es una de las principales alegrías de cada viaje. A la mañana siguiente, amenazaba tornado en la zona, así que los planes para el día se redujeron a relajarnos en casa y disfrutar de nuestra compañía. Fui hasta la estación de Richmond dando un paseo para intentar que me devolvieran el dinero, pero por supuesto, no coló. De vuelta me detuve en el parque junto al puente, debajo hay un pequeño café que tiene unas cuantas sillas con vistas al paseo del río. En los días soleados (a diferencia de hoy, que estaba gris y sombrío) es un lugar precioso para sentarse y echar el rato con un café o un té, y si vas con niños, es divertido alquilar una barca allí y remar río arriba y río abajo. Cuando estudiaba en la universidad, trabajaba por las tardes y los fines de semana cerca de allí, en el lado opuesto de la ciudad, y todos los días iba y venía. Me encantaba esa parte del río y tomarme un café en ese café a la hora de comer, cuando podía permitírmelo, me parecía el mayor de los lujos. Hoy, sentada en una de las sillas de plástico con una taza de té, pensaba en lo pobre que era en aquella época y en lo devastador que habría sido perder la travelcard. Ahora no era genial, pero podía seguir con mi vida y adaptarme a la situación sin problemas. Me sentí profundamente agadecida.

DOMINGO

La isla del pastel de anguila y los gatos escoceses

El domingo mis amigas querían enseñarme Twickenham, que yo no conocía, ya que se han mudado recientemente a esta zona, después de muchos años viviendo en el este de Londres, donde yo también vivía. Una cosa guay de Londres es que es tan enorme que hay mil mundos contenidos en ella. Cada vez que voy encuentro lugares interesantes que antes no conocía. Visitamos Eel Pie Island, una islita en el Támesis con una comunidad privada que tiene un nombre glorioso y que es diminuta e idílica. Después paseamos por los jardines de York House, en los que hay una fuente, ahora en restauración, que me hizo pensar en un Bernini moderno pero con ninfas peleándose. En un banco se podía leer la inscripción "Ed Jones. Si el amor hubiera podido salvarte, habrías vivido para siempre". Ed fue alguien con mucha suerte.

¿Y los gatos escoceses? Pues eran un paquete de avena escocesa (scottish oats) en la cocina de mi amiga que estaba cerrado con una goma elástica. Yo leía todo el rato GATOS ESCOCESES (Scottish Cats).

Quería venir a Londres por su libertad (Roksanda)

Si hay un pueblo al que se le da bien la autopromoción, ese es el británico. Uno de los platos fuertes de este viaje a Londres era visitar REBEL, una exposición celebrada en el Design Museum y comisariada por la periodista Sarah Mower que celebra el talento de l+s jóvenes diseñador+s británic+s. Sigue a algunos de los nombres más conocidos de la moda británica desde los años 90, galardonados con el premio NEWGen. Aquí hay gente importante, desde McQueen a JW Anderson, pasando por Nensy Dojaka, Priya Ahluwalia o Craig Green. También retrata una época muy particular de la vida en Londres, en la que se estaba iniciando un boom de creatividad, impulsado por una educación creativa de alta calidad a precios asequibles. Lo que significaba que los creativos de moda provenientes de todos los estratos sociales y lugares, incluida Europa, podían venir a la ciudad a estudiar, mezclarse y salir de fiesta juntos, lo que desembocaba en una forma de entender el diseño que es espectacular. No sé si sigue siendo así hoy en día, pero quizás las cosas han cambiado tras el Brexit y el precio astronómico de las tasas universitarias. Hoy en día sólo unos pocos elegidos pueden estudiar allí.

Pensé en la suerte que tuve de estudiar en Londres en aquella época. Recibí una beca que cubría mis gastos de matrícula y llegué en el momento perfecto. Así que, aunque la exposición contaba la historia de muchos de estos diseñadores de principios de la década de 2000, yo sentí que era mi propia historia la que también se estaba contando. Fue muy emotivo, no esperaba tener recuerdos tan intensos y tantos vínculos con muchos de estos diseñadores. Al leer sus motivaciones y esperanzas descubrí cuanto se parecían a las mías, por qué vinieron a Londres, qué tipo de impacto querían causar y comprendí dónde estaban las raíces de mi trabajo creativo y mis motivaciones mas por qué tiendo a hacer y ver las cosas de una determinada manera.  Hice tantas fotos que la exposición se puede ver fácilmente desde mi teléfono, pero no os preocupéis, os dejo sólo unas pocas.

Portal de la ciudad

Último día en Londres y con la agenda repleta, había mil cosas que quería hacer y aún no había hecho.  Primero fui a la National Portrait Gallery, hace más de 20 años que no iba. Esta vez me apetecía mucho ir, quizá por todo el tiempo que hacía. Es interesante lo inesperada que puede ser la ejecución de un retrato, me encantó. También me alegró ver hasta que ha habido una gran evolución con respecto a la representación de la verdadera diversidad de Inglaterra en esta galería desde la última vez que fui. Queda mucho por hacer a nivel colectivo en nuestro camino a ser una sociedad en la que la pluralidad y diversidad de la calle sea representada sin que se trate como un acontecimiento, pero hay que reconocerles que están en ello. 

Después me fui a comer Dim Sum, que son mi pequeño paraíso en la Tierra. La última vez que estuve en Londres descubrí este restaurante que los hace buenísimos, así que allá que me fui. Para mí, ninguna visita al centro de Londres está completa sin una caña en The French House y un café en Bar Italia, ambos en el Soho (si conoces Londres, ya sé que no estoy descubriendo nada, pero un clásico es un clásico). Cuando vivía aquí me encantaba venir a estos dos sitios porque me recordaban a casa, en su estilo tan francés e italiano, pero lo que en realidad representan es el Soho más auténtico.

El día terminó con un paseo hasta Angel, otra de mis zonas favoritas, en Islington. Está lleno de bares y tiendas chulas. Una joya de la zona es Camden Passage, que los miércoles y sábados tiene un mercadillo de antigüedades y tiene algunas tienditas y bares realmente especiales. Aquí van mis tops: si caminas desde la estación, lo primero que encontrarás es uno de los salones de té japoneses más auténticos de Londres, Katsute 100, el sitio es precioso, pero no esperes un tatami, es más como una farmacia a la antigua usanza, con madera oscura, papel pintado japonés y mesitas, la selección de té es magnífica y las tartas... wow. Un poco más abajo está Camden Head, el lugar es íntimo y bonito, con sus reservados y su terraza al aire libre para los días cálidos. Fui allí a tomar una cerveza con Marta Royo, quién fue colaboradora de La Moda Que Nos Parió, me encantó que por fin pudimos pasar un rato en persona, después de muchos años colaborando de diferentes maneras pero casi siempre online. La comida no es muy buena, así que no te molestes, pero las bebidas son las mismas en todas partes y este pub es precioso. Por último, al final de esta callecita hay una tiendecita vintage de vajillas , donde tienen los juegos de té y café y las cristalerías más bonitas.

Last week I was in London, and I thought it’d be fun sharing some of the things that happened and some lovely places that I discovered. I am a big rambler, I love taking little diversions that take me to unexpected places. This city is a second home to me and after living there for most of my twenties, I still go as often as I can. My original idea for this post was to share with you some favourite places and things to do in London, but because the week turned out to have a mind of its own (don’t they all?), mixed with lots of memories, and  some freaky weather, I’m sharing many great places but I’m also leaving lots of beloved places in the sack, I’ll save them for future posts. Here is a little slice of my London:

FRIDAY

Not seeing the forest for the bricks

The day started a bit randomly, the Tube’s Jubilee Line reminded me of a leaky and badly lit version of Kubrick's Space Odyssey spacecraft corridors. Initially I was thinking of going to the Barbican to visit the library, but the day was so bright and lovely that I went for a walk around London Bridge instead, and ended up in The White Cube. This gallery now has locations all over the world but years ago used to be exactly that, a white cube of a building in Hoxton Square, where in 2004 I saw one of those exhibitions that remained forever ingrained in my mind, it featured a series of portraits of well known actors by Sam Taylor-Johnson (then Taylor-Wood) called Crying Men. Today, the White Cube has two sites in London, one in Green Park and the one in Bermondsey where I went and saw Antony Gromley’s Body Politic. The main area had a series of minimal sculpture pieces made with rusty metal or bricks, which I have to admit were doing nothing for me. I then entered a room full of brick formations that resembled an ancient site, it took a while but then I suddenly saw a lounging figure, then another and another, each in different positions. What had resembled a sea of bricks became human (or robotic if we consider the shape) loungers and yoguis here and there. It was quite magical seeing the transformation. I guess it’s a bit like life, you see nothing and then: boom!

A bit further down, in Morocco St. I stumbled on a little bookshop cafe and went in. It was my kind of place, with a nice selection of books on art, fashion and independent novels. From some of the books hung labels with personal notes of recommendation. I thought it was such a great idea! Great for the writers, but also for the buyers, who might not feel like chatting to the bookseller, but still appreciate their input. 

Later, I crossed Borough Market for my London ritual walk around the southbank, my favouriter of the favourites, the thing I never fail to do when in London. I love the old dock buildings with their long windows and cranes, painted in beautiful blue and grey, the Thames with its view of st. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Modern (where I bought a fantastic little book by Michaela Coel: Misfits. A Personal Manifesto, it felt so fitting that I couldn't resist buying it), and the BFI, which was showing John Waters’ Pink Flamingos that evening. Right in front of the BFI and under the Waterloo Bridge there is a second hand book market, where I love to go to find jewel-books, but that day only a couple of stalls were open, so no more interesting findings for the day. I had a silent strategy battle with a pink haired, pink bow on hairdo, pink tulle-oversize-gown lady (maybe there for Pink Flamingos?) for the only available table by the window at the BFI café overlooking the river, and won, so I sat there and wrote for a while, finishing my out of love letter to Helmut Newton and noticing, for the first time in months, that writing came easy.

SATURDAY

Lost travelcard then and now

On my way home the day before I realised I’d lost my weekly travelcard. What a nightmare! Whenever I go to London I stay with one of my oldest and dearest friends, and spending time together is one of the main joys of each trip. The next morning, there was a tornado looming in the area so the plans for the day got downgraded to chilling out at home and enjoying each other's company. I walked to Richmond station to try and get a refund, but of course, I got none. On my way back I stopped at the bridge, underneath there is a little café that has a few chairs overlooking the river’s promenade. On sunny days, (unlike today, which was looking grey and gloomy) it is a gorgeous place to sit down and relax with a coffee or tea, and if you’re with kids, a fun thing to do is hire a boat right there and row up and down the river. When I was at uni I had an evening and weekend job close by, it was on the opposite side of the city to where I lived, and everyday I travelled back and forth. I used to love that part of the river and getting a coffee at the cafe for my lunch break, when I could afford it, felt like the biggest luxury. Today as I sat on one of the plastic chairs with a cup of tea, I thought about how broke I was then, and how devastating it would have been losing the travelcard at the time. Now it wasn’t great, but I could go on with my life and adapt to the situation without a fuss. I was grateful.

SUNDAY

Eel Pie Island and Scottish Cats

On Sunday my friends wanted to show me Twickenham, which I didn’t know, as they have recently moved into the area, after many years living in East London, where I also lived. One cool thing about London is that it is so massive that there’s a thousand worlds contained in it. Every time I go I find interesting places I didn't know previously. We visited Eel Pie Island, a private community island with a glorious name that felt tiny and idyllic. Later we walked around York House Gardens, which had a fountain, now in restoration, that made me think of a modern Bernini but with fighting nymphs. A bench had the inscription “Ed Jones. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever”. Ed was very fortunate. 

And the Scottish Cats? They were obviously a packet of oats in my friend’s kitchen with a rubber band across. I kept reading SCOTTISH CATS.

MONDAY

I only wanted to come to London because of the freedom (Roksanda)

If there is a people that are good at self promotion, it’s the brits. One of the highlights for this trip to London was visiting REBEL, an exhibition held at the Design Museum and curated by Sarah Mower celebrating British young designer talent. It follows some of the best known names in British fashion since the 90s who were awarded the NEWGen prize. There are some heavy weight people here, from McQueen, to JW Anderson to Nensy Dojaka, Priya Alhuwalia or Craig Green. It also depicts a very particular time in London life, where a boom of creativity was starting, boosted by high quality creative education at affordable prices. Which meant that fashion creatives from all social backgrounds and places, including Europe, could come to the city to study, mingle and party together to create great design. I don’t know if it is still so today, but maybe things have changed with things like Brexit and the now astronomical university fees. Today only a selected few are fortunate enough to study there. 

I was reflecting on how lucky I was to study there at that particular time. I received a grant that covered my student fees and I arrived with perfect timing. So while the exhibition was telling the story of many of these designers during the early 2000s, for me, it was also telling mine. It felt really emotional, I wasn’t expecting to have such strong memories and so many links to many of these designers. Reading their motivations and hopes I found they echoed mine, why they came to London, what kind of impact they wanted to make, and most importantly, I understood where the roots of my creative work and motivations lay and why I tend to do and see things in a certain way.  I took so many pictures that the exhibition can effectively and easily seen from my phone, but don’t worry, I'll just leave you with a few hits.

TUESDAY

City Portal

Last day in London and I had a packed schedule, there were so many things I wanted to do and hadn’t yet done!  First I went to the National Portrait Gallery, I hadn’t gone in over 20 years and I wanted to go because it had been such a long time and I was curious about how I'd see it now. It is interesting how unexpected a portrait can be, I found it quite inspiring. I was happy to see how much the representation of Britain’s true diversity has opened up in this gallery since I last went. There is so much work to do collectively if we want to become a society in which true plurality and diversity can be represented without it having to be an event.

After that I went for Dim Sum, which are my little heavens on Earth. Last time I was in London I discovered this restaurant which makes them delicious, so off I went. And in my book, no visit to central London is complete without a drink at The French House and a coffee in Bar Italia, both in Soho (if you know London I’m not discovering anything, I know, but a classic is a classic). When I was living here I used to love coming to these two places because they reminded me of home in their very french and italian way, but in all truth represent the best and most authentic Soho.

The day finished with a walk to Angel, another of my favourite areas, in Islington. It is full of bars and cool shops. A jewel in the area is Camden Passage, which on Wednesdays and Saturdays has an antique flea market and has some really special places, here are my top ones: if you walk from the station, the first thing you’ll find is one of the most authentic Japanese tea rooms in London, Katsute 100, the place is beautiful, but don’t expect a tatami, it is more like an old fashioned pharmacy, with dark wood, gorgeous wallpaper, and little tables, the tea selection is superb and the cakes… wow. A little further down there’s Camden Head, a pub dating from late 18h century, the place is intimate and beautiful with its reserved areas and sunny beer garden for the warm days. I went there for a drink with Marta Royo, she was one of the contributors to my podcast, and it was incredible to finally spend some time in person with her, after many years collaborating in different ways but hardly ever face to face. The food there is not great, so don’t bother, but the drinks are the same everywhere and this pub is gorgeous. Finally, at the end of this little street there’s a tiny vintage homeware shop, where they have the most beautiful tea and coffee sets and glassware.

Dear Helmut,

Time has come for me to say goodbye. I don’t love you anymore. 

Considering you are dead, you probably won't care, nor would you if you were still alive. For me though, this came as a shock, especially after so many years of admiration. Either way, you’ve had plenty of dislike and adoration by women, and have been worshipped by photographers for a big chunk of your career, so I guess you've had enough of other people’s emotions. Nevermind, the thing is, the spark is gone for me and I realise now that what used to feel like a shared knowing was actually just a one sided emotion, so please don't fight this, I must set both you and myself free. But maybe you’re curious about what made me have such a change of heart, I'll try to explain.

I realised I had stopped loving you quite unexpectedly. I spent the New Year holidays in my dad’s hometown, A Coruña, a city in North West Spain where Inditex has its HQ and where Marta Ortega (Amancio Ortega’s daughter and current chair of Inditex) has put together The MOP Foundation, an exhibition centre which is currently holding a retrospective of your work. Oh, Helmut, you should have seen the place! It is a huge space, designed to show photography in all its glory. There is also a repurposed concrete factory which doubles as a coffee shop and gallery, where the silos complete the exhibition with some of your most memorable polaroids.

But coming back to my falling out of love, I should have suspected something was wrong that day, when the morning started rainy and grey, not that I believe in omens, but that one was inescapable, something was off.  But I digress, the space is located in the city’s port, it has an artistic shallow pool under a construction that resembles a modern temple, with two walls separated by a staircase. The pool should have been glistening to create an impression of a mirror under the white walls, but in the grey light it looked washed out, sad and somewhat musty. Right upon entrance the space is dark, and there is a massive room where different examples of your work and interviews to curators, models and muses are projected on the four walls. The interviews offer some insights and interesting information and add a sense of intimacy to what we’re about to see: some of the pivotal moments of your career and life are discussed, the fruitful collaboration with June, your wife, and how much your work exploded when you left Sydney and came to Paris. Then, we passed on to a room where lots of tearsheets of your work are put together to compose a collage, there was also some memorabilia on display, including a few barbies that I didn’t quite understand and to be honest haven’t researched on, but I guess they make sense within you work, because now that I think of it, the women in your pictures are in a way like them... Anyway, after that, off I went into a series of dark galleries where some of your biggest known photographs were shown in a truly gorgeous way, many illuminated from the back, like your super famous nudes, which were displayed in a huge format of at least 2,5 metres high. 

Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate how luscious, sexy, and powerful your work was, but you know, quite a lot of time has passed… My expectation that day was to thoroughly enjoy the exhibition, and while I loved the curators' work and how it had been put together, the darkness in the rooms designed to push the atmosphere… regarding your images I’m sorry to say I didn't feel anything [remotely similar to what I used to feel]. Which is a lot, because I’ve loved your work ever since I was a very young fashion student. I know, I know, everything has a time and a place and things done in the past can’t be judged solely with the eyes of today. But after so many years loving you, I was surprised to find how very little was left between us. When I first encountered your photographs more than 20 years ago, they felt sexy, empowering, resolute, funny and supremely powerful. I loved that you put women in positions in which they were simply not seen before, not even imagined by most of society, I loved the sense of humour and irony of them. Now it pains me to say that I saw something else I hadn't noticed before: Male Gaze. There was nothing as powerful as I remembered from the women’s perspective other than in your images they are as sexual and free as you wanted them to be, much as I tried I didn’t see their desire, I saw yours. Which is totally fine, but I loved you because, call me naive,  I felt there was something between us, an understanding, a rebelliousness, I don’t know, something that bound us together and that made me feel seen. Now I realise it was just you all along. I guess I was so shocked by the freedom that your images prortrayed at that time that I didn’t notice, how little of that freedom was for anyone else other than you and the story of you, so much as the photographs depict women, it is you who I see and it’s kind of stale now. For some reason, the image of your work I had in my mind was quite the opposite, in it, it was the women who were usually dressed or naked, but holding a space of power against men, I reimagined your work as a reversal of roles, not as the fabulations of a peeping tom. So there, we only see what we want to see.

 I’ll give you an example, Grace Jones looking at us from under a towering Dolf Lundgren. Let's imagine for a moment that we’ve never heard of her, or him or the gorgeous couple they made; her super strong and fierce, him so young and slightly shy. Actually, not many Gen Zers have, I can guarantee you that, I teach at fashion university and trust me, they wouldn’t know either of them, when they first arrive they don’t even know you. But anyway, let’s imagine I show them this picture in class and ask them to tell me what they see. Do you think they’re going to see one of the most powerfully beautiful, mysterious and edgy artists of the 70s and 80s against a her young towering action movies actor boyfriend? Will Jean Paul Goude’s goddess come to mind? Do you think they’ll fathom that you might maybe have been imagining a different facet of her, vulnerable and petite against a swedish gigantic man? No, they’re going to see a little woman looking back at the camera with a scared expression. And let me tell you, it was when I saw that picture that I finally got mad at you. Did it bother you how f*cking fierce she was and had to put her back in her place? I know that wasn’t the case, but that’s what this picture kind of says, and that’s the shot you chose. You had a choice. With many of your pictures, even if they’re not my thing anymore I can give you a pass, a naked woman swallowed by a crocodile, the fighting girls in the beach, or the hose directed at a painted woman’s back body: they are fun, they are masterful storytelling and photography, even the girl whose bangs have just been cut and the trimmings are scattered all over her breasts and face, it's a poetic and intimate picture, but why making the most interesting and strong women look like little things or sex dolls? I allowed your work to become one of my references, not just me, a big chunk of the fashion imagery created during the decade of the aughts and 2010’s was modelled around yours. And we already know what some people thought that gave them leeway to do. But more than anything, I’ve shot so many of them, I’ve taken so many images of models following your path and ideas, I’ve made some many women dolls. I now realise you were not playing in my team, and I wish I’d shot more following Ellen von Unwerth’s. 

So yes, much as I loved our time together, I can’t keep you in that special place. Of course, your work does deserve credit for at the time, showing the world how mysterious and mesmerising the female energy can be, how sexy the look of her desire is, how powerful as a creature Woman is. I will always love you for unleashing that image in women’s minds. Since no one had done it so well before, you’ll always have a place in my heart. I do love the colour palettes in your colour photography, and although murkier in my mind now than when I first encountered your mannequin series, I regard them fondly, but my love for you is gone. We can still be friends, though.

Ha llegado el momento de decir adiós. Ya no te amo.

Teniendo en cuenta que estás muerto, probablemente no te importe, seguramente tampoco te importaría si aún vivieras. Sin embargo, para mí ha sido un poco de shock, sobre todo después de tantos años de admirarte. En cualquier caso, como tú has tenido tu ración de odio y adoración por parte de las mujeres y has sido venerado por multitud de fotógrafos a lo largo de gran parte de tu carrera, supongo que ya has tenido suficientes emociones de los demás. No importa, el caso es que la chispa ha desaparecido y ahora me doy cuenta de que lo que antes parecía un entendimiento no era más que una emoción unilateral, así que no te resistas, debo liberarte a ti y a mí misma. Quizà te interese saber por saber qué me hizo cambiar de opinión, intentaré explicártelo.

Me di cuenta que mi amor por tí se había acabado de forma bastante inesperada. Fui a pasar las fiestas de fin de año en la ciudad natal de mi padre, A Coruña, una ciudad del noroeste de España donde Inditex tiene su sede y donde Marta Ortega (hija de Amancio Ortega y actual presidenta de Inditex) ha creado la Fundación MOP, un centro de exposiciones que actualmente alberga una retrospectiva de tu obra. Helmut, ¡tendrías que haber visto el lugar! Es un espacio enorme, diseñado para mostrar la fotografía en todo su esplendor. También hay una antigua hormigonera reconvertida en cafetería y galería, cuyos silos completan la exposición con algunas de tus polaroids más memorables.

Pero volviendo a mi desamor, ya debería haber sospechado que algo iba mal ese día, cuando la mañana empezó lluviosa y gris, no es que yo crea en presagios, pero éste estaba bastante claro. El espacio está situado en el puerto de la ciudad, tiene una piscina estanque bajo una construcción que se asemeja a un templo moderno, con dos paredes separadas por una escalera. La piscina debería haber brillado para crear la impresión de un suelo reluciente bajo las paredes blancas, pero con la luz gris daba un aspecto desvaído, triste, incluso un poco rancio. Nada más entrar, el espacio está a oscuras, y hay una enorme sala en cuyas cuatro paredes se proyectan diferentes ejemplos de tu trabajo junto con entrevistas a comisarios, modelos y musas. Las entrevistas ofrecen algunos temas e información interesante y añaden intimidad a lo que vamos a ver: se habla de algunos de los momentos cruciales de tu carrera y vida, de la fructífera colaboración con June, tu mujer, y de lo mucho que explotó tu obra cuando dejaste Sydney y viniste a París. Luego pasamos a una sala en la que un montón de recortes de tu trabajo componen un collage, y algunos recuerdos expuestos, incluidas unas cuantas barbies que no entendí muy bien pero sobre las que, para ser sincera, no he investigado, aunque supongo que tienen sentido dentro de tu obra, porque ahora que lo pienso, las mujeres de tus fotos son un poco como ellas... En fin, después de eso pasé a una serie de galerías oscuras donde se muestran algunas de tus fotografías más conocidas de una forma realmente preciosa, muchas iluminadas por detrás, como tus famosísimos desnudos, que se exponían en un formato de al menos 2,5 metros de altura.

No me malinterpretes, tu trabajo me sigue siendo espectacular a muchos niveles, es sexy y poderoso, pero ¿sabes? El tiempo ha pasado... Ese día yo esperaba disfrutar completamente de la exposición, y aunque me encantó el trabajo de los comisarios y cómo se había realizado el montaje de la muestra, la oscuridad de las salas para impulsar la atmósfera... en lo que respecta a tus fotos siento decir que no sentí nada [remotamente parecido a lo que solía sentir]. Lo cual ya es mucho, porque me había encantado tu trabajo desde que estudiaba moda. Lo sé, lo sé, todo tiene un tiempo y un lugar y las cosas hechas en el pasado no pueden juzgarse únicamente con los ojos de hoy. Pero después de tantos años admirándote, me sorprendió comprobar lo poco que quedaba entre nosotros. La primera vez que vi tus fotografías, hace más de 20 años, me parecieron sexys, empoderantes, decididas, divertidas y profundamente poderosas. Me encantaba que pusieras a la mujer en posiciones en las que simplemente no se la había visto antes, en las que la mayor parte de la sociedad ni siquiera la había imaginado, me encantaba tu sentido del humor y tu ironía. Ahora me duele decir que vi algo más que no había notado antes: Mirada Masculina. No había nada tan remotamente potente como yo lo recordaba desde el punto de vista de una mujeres, más allá de que en tus imágenes éstas son tan sexuales y libres como tú las dejabas ser y por mucho que lo intenté no vi su deseo, sino el tuyo. Lo cual está muy bien, pero yo te quería porque, llámame ingenua, sentía que había algo entre nosotros, una comprensión, una rebeldía, no sé, algo que nos unía y que me hacía sentirme vista. Ahora me doy cuenta de que siempre fuiste tú. Supongo que estaba tan impresionada por la libertad que tus imágenes significaban en aquella época que no me di cuenta de lo poco que esa libertad era para cualquier persona que no fueras tú y que por mucho que las fotografías retraten a mujeres, es a ti a quien veo y ahora se me ha quedado todo un poco apolillado. Por alguna razón, la imagen que tenía en mi mente de tu obra era todo lo contrario, en ella, eran las mujeres las que normalmente estaban vestidas o desnudas, pero sosteniendo un espacio de poder frente a los hombres, reimaginé tu obra como una inversión de roles, no como las fabulaciones de un mirón. Así que ahí lo tienes, sólo vemos lo que queremos ver.

Te pongo un ejemplo, Grace Jones mirándonos desde debajo de un altísimo Dolf Lundgren, imaginemos por un momento que nunca hubiésemos oído hablar de ella, ni de él, ni de la pareja tan espectacular que hacían; ella fuerte y feroz, él muy joven y algo tímido. En realidad, no muchos Gen Zers lo han hecho, eso te lo puedo garantizar, doy clases de moda en la universidad y créeme, no conocen a ninguno de los dos, cuando llegan allí por primera vez ni siquiera te conocen a ti. Pero en fin, vamos a imaginar que les enseño esta foto en clase y les pido que me digan lo que ven. ¿Crees que van a ver a una de las artistas más poderosamente bellas, misteriosas y vanguardistas de los años 70 y 80 frente a un imponente actor de películas de acción? ¿A la diosa de Jean Paul Goude?¿Crees que se darán cuenta de que tal vez estabas imaginando una faceta diferente de ella, vulnerable y menuda frente a su gigantesco novio sueco? No, van a ver a una mujer mirando a la cámara con expresión asustada. Y déjame decirte, cuando vi esa foto por fin me enfadé contigo. ¿Te molestaba lo indomable que ella era y tuviste que ponerla en su sitio? Sé que probablemente no era el caso, pero eso es lo que dice esta foto, y esa fue la que tú elegiste. Con muchas de tus fotos, aunque ya no sean lo mío te puedo dar un pase, una mujer desnuda tragada por un cocodrilo, las chicas tirándose del pelo en la playa, o la manguera dirigida a la espalda pintada de una mujer: son divertidas, son maestras en cuanto a narrativa y técnica fotográfica, incluso la chica a la que le acaban de cortar el flequillo y tiene los pechos y cara llenos de pelitos, es una foto poética e íntima, pero ¿por qué hacer que las mujeres más interesantes y fuertes parezcan cositas o muñecas sexuales? Permití que su trabajo se convirtiera en una de mis referencias, no sólo yo, una gran parte de las imágenes de moda creada durante la década de los 2000 y 2010 se modeló en torno a tus ideas. Y ya sabemos lo que algunos pensaron que eso les daba libertad para hacer... Pero sobre todo, he fotografiado a tantas, he tomado tantas imágenes de modelos siguiendo tus ideas, he hecho tantas muñecas de mujer. Ahora me doy cuenta de que no jugabas en mi equipo, y ojalá hubiera fotografiado más siguiendo el ejemplo de Ellen von Unwerth.

Así que sí, por mucho que me gustara nuestro tiempo juntos, no puedo dejarte en ese lugar especial que ocupabas. Por supuesto, tu trabajo tiene mucho mérito por mostrar al mundo lo misteriosa e hipnotizante que puede ser la energía femenina, lo sexy que es su deseo y lo poderosa que es la mujer como criatura.  Siempre te querré por haber liberado esa imagen en la mente de las mujeres. Como nadie lo había hecho tan bien antes, siempre tendrás un lugar en mi corazón. Me siguen encantando la paleta de tu fotografía en color, y aunque mucho más turbias en mi mente ahora que cuando me topé con tu serie de maniquíes por primera vez, sigo viéndolas con cariño. Pero Helmut, mi amor por ti es ya cosa del pasado. Si quieres podemos seguir siendo amigos.

Have you noticed how much we have recently started to look like each other? Is this a trend or is it actually the consequence of living in a world where we have ditched the things that inspired us in the past but also meant making an effort? Things like noticing the costume design in a film, being moved by the colour palette in an artwork, imagining the way a character in a novel might look, music videos, traveling, and all those other things beyond fashion that conform the individual and global experience of dressing, which have somehow disappeared from our regular set of references when it comes to putting together a look. To make matters worse, many of those sources of references suffer from the same Stockholm Syndrome that we do, so there we are.

The other day I came across this post on Rachel Solomon’s Substack where she delves into what does personal style mean today, since we live in a post social media world where everyone looks the same. You should definitely read it because it’s very interesting, the point she makes rings very true from my side of the fence. The past few years I have been noticing this shift towards uniformity. At the beginning of the 2010’s I was starting my career, one of my regular jobs was shooting editorials in different locations across Europe for an inflight magazine, when I first saw this uniformity in regards not only to clothes, but also in the habits of people. Our assignment was to look for the coolest neighbourhoods in each destination and shoot fashion editorials there that represented the unique style of those cities and areas. At the beginning it was easy, after a while, we realized the same cafes, restaurants and shops where sprouting everywhere, but not only that, people’s styles were becoming increasingly aligned. As if an all-powerful fashion editor had sent a memo that everyone had received on the “acceptable styles of the day”. And they weren’t that many.

A few weeks ago I was talking about individuality, how (quite rightly) the New York Times wondered if individuality was going out of fashion. Maybe it’s not that it is going out of fashion, it’s just that the pressure to conform to a very strict set of aesthetics has camped out in everyone’s subconscious thanks to our daily social media overdose and we just don’t know anymore how to tell our own story through the clothes we wear. Some forgot, some others don’t dare, because it feels like muddy ground. And although there are a thousand articles and newsletters on what to wear and how to do it, I’m going to try and explain my 4 unbeatable techniques to tell your story through clothes.

I am aware that many of you are not dealing with the rigours of winter we are experiencing in the northern hemisphere, nevertheless I am going to use the excuse of coats to give some examples of storytelling through clothes, because the layering effect helps build a narrative and adds plain old structure. Also, the idea of talking about coats, second hand ones, came after reading Gillian Orr’s post from a few weeks ago about how difficult it is to find a good coat that serves the purpose of keeping you warm while working seamlessly within the different obligations in you life (work, going out, walking the dog, groceries...) without going bankrupt, to which I commented, suggesting that she looked into second hand options, they’re usually cheaper pieces and when vintage, better quality. After polling with more stylist friends, the consensus was general: Having a single coat for everything doesn’t usually work. So I’ve chosen five pieces, a classic coat, a puffer coat, a trench, a shearling and a quilted coat. Not that we need all five, but I’m going to rely on them for variety’s sake.

These techniques are not the only ones there are, but they are common practice for stylists. All the coats are vintage and the rest of the clothes are aw23 for the most part, therefore on sale now, please don’t take them literally, the idea is to talk about shapes, colours and types of clothing. Nevertheless, if you fall in love with anything, drop me a comment and I’ll let you know where it’s from. One last thing to keep in mind is that dressing is like creating characters, so anything is possible.

Ready? Off we go!

1. Tonal Styling

   The key here lies in the colour palette. You can do it three ways, one, you choose all your look’s pieces from varying shades of the same colour and build the outfit as randomly as it happens, because it always works and looks fantastic.

   Note. You can use textures here, but I don’t recommend using prints, it will look messy and heavy. Stick to plain colours.

   The other way is a bit more complicated but enormously satisfying, which consists in building colour families, that is, complementary colours that live in the same colour temperature. That sounds cryptic, but look at the gallery underneath the mood-board and you’ll see what I mean, each group of colours will create looks that feel playful and creative, even if your clothes had a fairly serious cut. Avoid using more than three, keep the rest in neutrals.

   In the third way, the trick would be choosing clothes that have a similar hue and create effect using a piece in a contrasting colour. This works when you are really loving that one piece and want your whole styling to work as a frame for it. Oldie but goldie, this one.

2. Challenging preconceived ideas

   One of the most succesful styling tips is to work with the unexpected. A shearling is a regular casual piece that we would normally use for everyday activities or the countryside. The trick here is to bring another layer of personality to your look, so, in fact, we’d be doing the styling the other way around, so first the look, later the coat: let's say you are going for a party, and have a whimsical or fairly dreamy outfit put together, adding the shearling and a pair of chunky boots to destroy every notion of this-goes-with-that. When you bring the unexpected in, your are effectively telling the world that labelling you won’t be easy. Another reason why this pairing works, is the shape, bulky at the top and flowing and ethereal at the bottom, so the silhouette feels taller and more balanced that we’d initially imagine.

3. The Star of the Show

   This is great for story telling. You could maybe use any of your favourite books or films as reference, and make it more or less literal, your choice. The idea is to build a character, so that you can add layers of personality with which you identify, like in this case: A girly trench in bright orange could be paired with a pair of denim trousers and shirt that give boyish-50s style, while adding more feminine elements that bring to mind the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, which the trench could originally inspire. The contrasting characters add depth to this look. Think about a particular character and how it relates to you, which different aspects of your personality are contained in it?

Another example: The star of the show in this case are the loafers, they sustain the whole storytelling of the look. I’m using technique no. 1 too, where I keep a colour palette, so that the loafers can take centre stage. I included references from subcultures and cinema to create a character, maybe someone from The Fight Club or a Tarantino film?

4. Playing with proportions

   This is a fairly basic one, but I like it because it contains a bit of all the others. The proportions are key, so this would be an idea for a cropped puffer jacket. The theory behind it is like in no. 2, bulky on top, long and lean on the bottom. The twist comes from contrasting a day piece with transparencies, shiny details and high waisted trousers. The reference works through mood: how do you want to feel today? And the edginess lies in the fact that you can be quite naked underneath because the puffer will keep you warm. Also, playing with contrasting colours can help isolate the part of your outfit that you want to showcase, in my option the focus is on the puffer, but in yours it could be a beaded top, sparkly trousers… your choice.

¿Os habéis dado cuenta de lo mucho que nos parecemos unos a tros últimamente? ¡Vamos igual! Es una tendencia o consecuencia de vivir en un mundo en el que hemos abandonado lo que antes nos inspiraba pero también requería esfuerzo, como fijarnos en el vestuario de una película, inspirarnos en la paleta de colores de una obra de arte, imaginar el look de un personaje de novela, los vídeos musicales, viajes y todas esas cosas que, más allá de la moda, conforman la experiencia individual y global del vestir y han desaparecido de nuestro conjunto habitual de referencias a la hora de vestirnos. Y para colmo, muchas de esas fuentes de referencia padecen el mismo Síndrome de Estocolmo que nosotros, así que ahí estamos.

El otro día me encontré con este post en Substack de Rachel Solomon en el que profundiza sobre lo que significa tener estilo personal hoy en día, ya que vivimos en un mundo post social media en el que todo el mundo se viste igual. Te lo recomiendo totalmente porque es muy interesante, y lo que dice me llega de cerca. En los últimos años he notado este cambio hacia la uniformidad. A principios de la década de 2010 empecé mi carrera y entre otros clientes, hacíamos editoriales en diferentes partes de Europa para una revista de una aerolínea cuando lo vi por primera vez no sólo en la ropa, sino también en los hábitos de la gente. Nuestro objetivo era encontrar los barrios más cool de cada destino y fotografiar allí editoriales de moda que representaran el estilo único de esas ciudades y zonas. Al principio fue fácil, pero al cabo de un tiempo nos dimos cuenta de que allá donde íbamos aparecían los mismos cafés, restaurantes y tiendas, pero no sólo eso, sino que los estilos de la gente estaban cada vez más alineados. Como si un todopoderoso editor de moda hubiera enviado un memorándum que todo el mundo hubiera recibido sobre los "estilos aceptables del día". Y no había tantos.

Hace unas semanas hablaba de la individualidad, de cómo (con razón) el New York Times se preguntaba si la individualidad estaba pasándose de moda. Quizá no es que se esté pasando de moda, es que la presión por ajustarse a una estética muy estricta se ha encajado en nuestro subconsciente por vía de nuestra sobredosis diaria de redes sociales y no sabemos ya cómo contar nuestra propia historia a través de la ropa que llevamos. Algun+s lo han olvidado, otr+s no se atreven porque les parece un terreno bastante pantanoso. Y aunque hay mil artículos y newsletters sobre qué ponerse y cómo hacerlo, voy a intentar explicar mis 4 técnicas infalibles para contar tu historia a través de la ropa que te pones.

Soy consciente de que muchos de vosotros no estáis lidiando con los rigores del invierno que estamos viviendo aquí en el hemisferio norte, aún así voy a utilizar la excusa de los abrigos para dar algunos ejemplos de storytelling a través de la ropa, porque trabajar con capas ayuda a construir una narrativa y añade estructura. Además, la idea de hablar de abrigos, de segunda mano, surgió tras leer hace unas semanas el post de Gillian Orr sobre lo difícil que es encontrar un buen abrigo que cumpla la función de abrigarte y a la vez funcione a bien con las diferentes obligaciones de tu vida (trabajo, salir, pasear al perro, ir de compras...) sin arruinarte, le dejé un cometario sugiriendo que mirara opciones de segunda mano, suelen ser piezas más baratas y cuando son vintage, de mejor calidad. Tras sondear a más amig+s estilistas, el consenso fue general: tener un abrigo para todo no suele funcionar. Así que he elegido cinco piezas: un abrigo clásico, un puffer coat, un trench, un shearling y un abrigo acolchado. No es que necesitemos los cinco, pero voy a contar con ellos para que haya variedad.

Estas técnicas no son las únicas que existen, pero son una práctica habitual para l+s estilistas. Todos los abrigos son vintage y el resto de las prendas son aw23 en su mayoría, así que ya de rebajas, por favor, no las tomes al pie de la letra, la idea es hablar de formas, colores y tipos de ropa. No obstante, si te enamoras de algo, déjame un comentario y te diré de dónde es. Una última cosa a tener en cuenta es que vestirse es como crear personajes, así que todo es posible.

Listos? Pues allá vamos!

1. Estilismo con color

   La clave está en la paleta de colores. Puedes hacerlo de tres maneras: una, eligiendo todas las piezas del look en distintos tonos de un mismo color y construyendo el conjunto de forma bastante aleatoria, porque siempre funciona y queda fantástico.

   Nota. Puedes usar texturas, pero no te recomiendo usar estampados, puede quedar pesado y barroco. Limítate a los colores lisos.

   La otra forma es un poco más complicada pero enormemente satisfactoria, y consiste en construir familias cromáticas, es decir, colores complementarios que convivan en la misma temperatura de color. Suena críptico, pero echa un vistazo a la galería que hay debajo del mood-board y verás a lo que me refiero, cada grupo de colores creará looks con una sensación divertida y creativa, aunque tu ropa tenga un corte bastante serio. Evita utilizar más de tres a la vez y mantén el resto en tonos neutros.

   En el tercer caso, el truco sería elegir prendas que tengan un tono similar y crear efecto utilizando una pieza en un color que contraste. Esto funciona cuando te encanta esa prenda y quieres que todo tu estilismo sirva de marco para ella. Un truco viejo pero efectivo.

2. Cuestionando ideas preconcebidas

   Uno de los consejos de estilismo más clásicos es buscar lo inesperado. Una cazadora de borreguito es una prenda informal que normalmente utilizamos para actividades cotidianas o el campo. El truco está en aportar otro nivel de personalidad a tu look, así que, en realidad, haríamos el estilismo al revés: si vas a una fiesta y has preparado un look ultra femenino o de ensueño, combínalo con la cazadora de borreguito para romper toda idea de esto va con aquello. Cuando introduces elementos inesperado, le estás diciendo al mundo que etiquetarte no será tarea fácil. Otra razón por la que este binomio funciona es la forma, voluminosa en la parte superior y fluida y etérea en la inferior, por lo que la silueta parece más alta y equilibrada de lo que imaginaríamos en un principio.

3. La estrella del espectáculo

   Esto es genial a nivel narrativa. Aquí podrías usar como referencia cualquiera de tus libros o películas favoritas, y hacerlo más o menos literal, tú eliges. La idea es construir un personaje, de modo que puedas añadirle capas de personalidad con las que te identifiques, en este caso: Una gabardina girly en naranja chillón se combina con vaqueros y camisa que le dan un estilo boyish-50s, al tiempo que se mantienen elementos más femeninos que traerían a la mente el cuento de Caperucita Roja, que la gabardina originalmente podría inspirar. L+s personajes contrastad+s también añaden profundidad a este look. Piensa en ese personaje en particular y en cómo se relaciona contigo, ¿qué aspectos de tu personalidad están contenidos en él?

Otro ejemplo: La estrella del espectáculo en este caso son los mocasines, sostienen toda la narrativa del look. También utilizo la técnica n.º 1, en la que mantengo una paleta de colores para que los mocasines sean los protagonistas. He incluido también referencias de subculturas y del cine para crear un personaje, quizá algun+ del Club de la Lucha o de una película de Tarantino...".

4. Jugando con las proporciones

   Este es bastante básico, pero me gusta porque contiene un poco de todos los demás. Las proporciones son la clave, así que esta sería una idea para un plumas corto. La teoría que hay detrás es como en la nº 2, voluminosa por arriba, larga por abajo. El giro aquí viene de contrastar una pieza de día con transparencias, detalles brillantes y pantalones de talle alto. La referencia es el estado de ánimo: ¿cómo quieres sentirte hoy? Y lo interesante del look radica en el hecho de que puedes ir bastante desnud+ debajo porque el plumas te mantendrá abrigad+. Además, jugando con el contraste de colores ayuda a aislar la parte del look que quieres resaltar; en mi caso, la atención se centra en el plumas, pero en el tuyo podría ser un top de pedrería, unos pantalones brillantes... tú eliges.
