Have you ever heard of the emotional concept of putting on a suit? My friend Ara, who is a therapist, told me about it at a time when I was struggling to compartmentalise my life. The idea is quite simple: if we always try to solve things from the same single perspective, it will be difficult. Nevertheless, we can wear a variation of suits that will help us deal with situations in which reductive feelings can get in our way, or simply to get some perspective from whatever your circumstances might be. The suit creates a little emotional distance and this, in turn relaxes and makes us more flexible. Flexibility is essential to getting things done without all the weight of our life experiences meddling with the results. The concept has stayed with me and it has been super useful to gain perspective when I get too much in my head.
All this to explain the meaning of the name of this section. In it I would like to talk not so much from me and the things I care or worry about, although I can't take that suit off, but from Patty with the stylist suit to propose a space to discuss the things I would buy or do either as a stylist or for myself, aligned not only with my values but also with the little tricks or "know-how" I’ve learned along the way. Each time will be different, and today I’m bringing you a selection of looks from Vestiare Collective, with outfits made by me.
If this were a magazine, I would be looking at occasions to wear these looks. To tell you the truth, last week I was supposed to be visiting (Arles Photography Festival) that finished this week, and these were my ideal looks for that. But work had other plans and I stayed for the studio-basement that I was telling you about in EYE. If you want to know more about this festival I sadly missed, you can check it out in the link above. I hope I can make it for next year even if the amazing Diane Arbus retrospective won’t be there anymore. So, what are these outfit options for? Well, they'll have to be for work.
My idea was to create a few looks that I would want to wear and actually buy, as I'm trying to move away from accumulating things that clutter my life and the planet and Vestiare seemed like the perfect place. On the other hand, I've always been a second-hand lover and have suffered from vintage addiction ever since I was a teenager. I love flea markets, second hand shops, charity shops and I adore Vestiaire Collective, a mixture between marketplace and second hand haven for fashion crazies. Not that I can afford most of the stuff they sell, but on a silly day I can spend hours browsing the app, just for the sake of it. So why not turning it into something useful? Even if I don’t buy it, some of you might. I also love collage, which can also keep me quiet for a few hours. In the end I've combined the two to bring the first instalment of "My Stylist's Outfit" to life.
It's true that Vestiare is quite expensive with fees and delivery, etc. but for the purpose here I have selected pieces from top brands for less than 350€ (most of them don’t go over 150€). If what I’ve suggested is not available in your size, the algorithm will offer you a similar option, we’ll let them do their job while I do mine. So the looks are a starting point for you to find your own. Or to keep like that if you like them.
Another thing that came to my mind has to do with the name of this section as well; I've always felt better, sexier and more powerful in a suit or blazer than in a dress. None of these looks are showstoppers, since they were intended for visiting a photography festival in the south of France looking cool and relaxed, but I would feel a million dollars wearing any of them, that’s why the are perfect for work too. The clothes are mixed, some of them are women’s for men and viceversa, the dolls are effectively genderless. I love playing with clothes, to me, gender separation in fashion collections feels quite old fashioned. I personally buy lots of menswear for myself and love to inherit things from my friends, my dad or my boyfriend (from whom I do steal some of his favourite stuff).
Finally, let’s get down to the job here. I've added links to the clothes under each outfit so you can go directly to the website and get them if still available. Let me be super clear, this was totally made out of love, so no advertising or affiliates involved, yet. If you guys enjoy this section, please comment and let me know, so that I might consider having them to help me continue putting together this project.
